A Ikuoo reporter yesterday met a gentleman from Joplttt who gave him the particulars of one of the most remarkably divorce Cases of which we have ever heard. The followiug i the 3torv • A lady sued for a divorce in Jop -lin recently and when it came up the starling developments of which we write were brought to light, and upon tneir strength a divorce was granted. In 1353, the lady, then a young and handsome maiden, a resident of Stone county, Southwest Missouri, married a worthy young man to whom she had long been engaged. Their union was a happy one, aud, as both had been reared in the vicin ity and were beloved and respected by all, they receiv. d the kindest ben iaons of all who knew them. Hut the war was raging around them, and their locality was altern ately occupied by each of the con tending armies, A draft was about to be made, and the young husband a month after his marriage, conclu ded to take advantage of the govern ment's liberal offers and enlist rati - < r than run the risk of being forced into the ranks without any emolu ment save the meagre pay of a pri vate. S > he voluntarily enlisted and became a private in the ranks of the Union Army. His courage and intelligence soon gained the respect of his officers and feilow men, and in several hard fought battles lie distinguished him self to such an extent that his name was forwarded by the Department Headquarters in St. Louis, aud in a short time returned emblazoned in A SECOND LIEUTENANT'S COX MISSION. The regiaient was tbei stationed ia Xorthern Arkansas, and at this oppoitune moment, when he was so near to all he held dear (for a son was born to him during iiis absence), he could not resist the temptation to obtain a short leave of absence < and visit his wife and child. I Tliis, to him high-prized boon, was easily obtained, and with his ] commission in his pocket, he mount ed his horse and started for home. ] With eager haste he pursued his I journey, his mind being filled with 1 bright visions of a happy meeting 1 with his heart's idols. At length ilie well remembered laud marks J 1 came to view. | ( lie was eu>se to iiome. A few hundred yards of the leafy forest, and he would be n the open ing where be conld see the am oke from the cot that contained his treasures. How he would surprise them ! Ilow hi 3 wife would cry for joy ! How the bright-eyed baby would— ••Halt!" came a fierce order in stentorian tones from the bash that surrounded the road. Ere he could rein his horse in obedience to the dread summons, lie was, as if by magic, surrounded by twenty or thirty fieice and heavily armed men, whom his practiced eye told him were the most unrelenting foes that the uuiform he wore ever had. His heart sank within him, brave as he was, for he knew there was no mer cy in the breast of a bush whacker, for such they were. A few q rations were put to hi m by the leader of the bund, but they were more for forui's sake than any thing else. His uniform was a mate ans .vor for all they wiihed to know, while from his pockets, which were rapidly turned inside out. the commission was drawu forth, which made them more eager for his blood. Toe leader of the band was a man near his o.vn age, and to him lie ap pealed and demanded that he be treated as a prisoner of war. His request was tieated with derision, aid a nioai3nt more his legs were pinioned and an ominous rope with a noose at its end da ogled from the limb of an adjacent tree. Again he appealed to iii 3 inhuman captors, and implored them to let him see his wife and child but for a moment before he died. But even as he supplicated, the leader put the fatal t nip around his neck, gave a signal .vith his hand, and the unfortunate man was swung off into eternity vith a prayer for his widowed wife t.i 1 or phi icd c'ail I up >n his lira. The next day t!** Corpse was dis covered swaying in the wind by a passing soMier, who, stopping fit the next house (which haupened to be the home of the offloer,) told the woman that there whs a man hang ing dead ti short distance down the road, and It was bettor, perhaps, ho should receive a C hristian buriel. i This was no uufrequent news in that locality, and nearly all the men being In the army, the sad woi k of interring the de.ul and caring for the wounded devolved upon the lone women. And faithfully and te'uier ly was it done-too, for they knew not but their own loveu ones were being cared for in a similar manner far off in some distant State. So the woman procured help of her sex who lived m the neighbor hood, and together thev proceeded on their sad mission. As they ap proached the corpse a strange fore boding passed through the mind of the woman who led them, for tin re was something familiar in that sus lnmded form, even in the midst of its unnatural surroundings. The blood rushed back to her heart as she uearcd it. Suddenly the urecza swayed it round, and—oh, horror ! in its distorted features she beheld the lineaments of her idolized hus band, the father of her child, and she swooned away in a dead faint upon the ground at the feet of him who in life was her all. Cruel was the blow that dashed down With one fell stroke all her earthly happiness, and in her agony shs prayed for death, that she might j'dn her murdered love in immortali ty ; but the uhvftitive wail of her sweet babe aroused her to a sense of duty, and she felt that she had sozuetning to live for and protect. Tenderly and reverently was the soldier-husband laid at rest in his narrow homo by these sorrowful women, whose symplnthciie grief was his only burial service. Bat the fairest il twers of the field and forest were gathered by the grief stricken widow and planted on the grave. In the sunny days of sum mer she would make daily pilgrim ages to the lonely grave, and sit with tender memories while her child prattled over the sod beneath which its father was mouldering away. Ten years passed. And though time had healed the wounds iu her heart, the love for him who had been the husband of her youth was still faithful. Iler child had become a youth, aud needed the stern, re strain g hand and experienced eouusel of a father. She, too, a weak, lane woman, was tired of fighting the battle of life, aud yield ed to the supplications of \ man who bore a good character. They were married, aud their lives blen- j ded into a happy, even tenor of con- j nubial existence. lie treated her ' kindly and affectionately, was a j father co her son, aud an honest, in dustrious bread winner for them all. .She loved and respected hiin, and her future seemed to her full recom pense for the weary past. It was seldom she referred to it. lie never. All he knew was that her husband was a soldier, like he bimself and thousands of others had been, and that he was dead, as thou sands of others like him were. lie had taken his place. lie did his duty. lie loved his wife ; she loved him in return. It was all he askei. One day not long since—ah ! it was an evil day—an old acquaint ance visited him. They had in the years agone been waira fiiends, for they had fought together under the banner of the sunny South, and oft had shared the same blankets as partisans yes, guerrillas, bush whackers, if you like. Right glad were they to meet and the husband received him cordially for old time's sake, and the wife made him welcome for the sake of her husband. One night as they sat an nd the ruddy hearth after the evening meal, the two men talk ed of the stirring scenes through which they had passed, and, as sol diers will, ' fought their battles o'er agaiu." While engaged iu dwelling on rem iniscences of war the liusbaud re marked that lie never knew how strong were the feelings or affections a man felt for his family until he himself had married, and placing his heavy hand on his companion's knee, he said, mournfully and earn estly : "John, I have always been sorry that I did not let that poor Yankee Lieutenant see his wife and child before we strung him up teu yeaVs ago." His wife heard the remark and slowly rose to her feet, with her face as wiiite as marble, and her distend ed eyes were fixed upon her husband's lace with an expression of intense horror. Twice she essayed to speak, bus failed. Then, vsith a 1 ud, un earth!/, heart-broken scream, she fell like a corpse to the floor. When she recovered her conscious ness she had little to say. The light of her love had gone out forever. She loved her husband, for he had been true and kind to her. Perhaps he was not so much blame that he killed her fiist love. It was the fort-u tof the war, she supposed- Hut- but —#hc Could live with him no longr. Oh, no. Thero came a picture from halls of memory that bade her go. Poor Payne laid his hear at her feet, hut slm is said to have toyed and coquetted with it, and then to have flung it aside. I \Y lieu all hope of winning the fair prize was abandoned, Payne went to Europe, where lie remained for nearly twenty years, and where he i wrote his "Home, Sweet Horn* I ,'' which was Rrst sung in his opera of "Clare," at London. This tradi tional incident in the life of Payne revives another (and one still cur rent in Richmond) connected with General Scott. It is said when lie first addressed Miss Mayo, he was only a captain in the regular army, and his suit was summarily dismiss ed. Afterward, when a major, he aenewed the proffer of his hind, but with 110 better success. The third t-iuie lie wore the epaulets of a gen eral, and these promptly secured Ira acceptance. "When ask ad by one of her friends why she had thus sud-i denly changed her mind.
