Stauffer a Sons, Inc. • Drought 1956 with a whopping 138 9 bushels per acre, looked good, but it will not approach that record this year. Some of the farmers I talked with practiced soil con servation, some did not, and some had part of their farms under conservation. Could the differences in crop appearance be accounted for by differences in management, or was it area that made the difference? Most of those who were practicing contour farming, and in some cases terracing, were reluctant to say that this accounted for the relatively good condition of their crops. Two farmers pointed out that the effects of scattered show ers could greatly effect yields even on neighboring farms. One man told me that he had seen one end of a field dry and dusty while the other end was so wet it couldn’t be cul tivated However, they all agreed on one thing; year in and year out, wet year or dry, in the long run they were well ahead of where they would have been had they not fol lowed good soil and water con servation practices. One farm er who had only half of his farm under conservation, plans to have it all enrolled under the program next year. He felt there were benefits to be gained, and the comparative appearance of the crops on his divided farm suggested that there were, he could not afford to be without them come another dry year. • scs (Continued from Page 1) contacted before the next meeting Applications from five new cooperators were considered, and were accepted unanimous ly.
