Saturday, January 20, 1962 ■ Forest Fires Lowest Ever HARRISBURG Forest fires consumed fewer acres of Pennsylvania forest lands in 1961 than in any other year, Forests and Waters Secretary Maurice K God dard announced today. “The 3200 acres burned in 1961 amount to less than one-half of the previous low record set in 1956 when 6940 acres of forests went up in smoke,” Goddard stat ed. Goddard also announced that the figure of 552 forest fires, accounted for in 1961, compares almost exactly to the previous low of 559 fires in 1956. “Last year’s forest fire record shows that in addition to keeping down the number of fires we have improved our techniques of putting them out,” Goddard said. Generally, forest fires in 1961 were quite small with only one fire burning more than 100 acres. One of the State’s forest districts 're ported 101 fires during the year which burned only 320 acres. Hunters caused more for est fires than any other ag ent, having been responsible for 150 fires in 1961, re ported H. B. Rowland, the Department’s Chief of Forest Protection. After hunters, incendiaries were the' sec ond largest cause with 80 fires, and railroads were third, causing 75 fires.'
