New Holland Tobacco Show Won By Student Galen Witmer, East Earl, a senior at Garden Spot High School, harvested a lath of tobacco from his patch on the farm of Earl H. Witmer, who hires him during the summer, and saw the lath suddenly become worth $5O Wednesday. Galen, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey L. Witmer took the grand championship of the big tobacco show at the New Holland Fair with a lath of five stalks of Greider tobacco entered in the filler class. The young farmer planted his first patch of tobacco last year but did not exhibit in the show last fall. This year he took the pick of his two acres and went for the big money. On the way he beat out the competition of 69 other laths of filler, wrap per and green tobacco. Larry R. Weaver, of New Holland Rl took the honors in the wrapper division while Kenneth M. Martin had the best green lath. George Carmin of General Cigar Company, judged the tobacco section of the three crop show. Omar Hess of Bareville. had the best 10-ear exhibit in the com show which saw a record 170 entries on the table. The 30-ear exhibit di vision was taken by Daniel' E. Trimble, Quarryville Rl. Roy A. Kline, Denver R 2 paid for the best single ear. -Judge Frank Earner of Penn State University said quality of the 30-ear show was excellent as was the single ear class. He said he thought the quality of the 10-ear show was somewhat less than last year. The 10-ear exhibit carried a $25 award; the 30-ear class had a $l5 top, and $5.00 was paid for the beht single ear. An award of $lOO.OO for a leafy, green sample of arti ficially cured alfalfa went to Galen Crouse, Stevens Rl when judges John Baylor of PSU and James Stere of the New Holland Machine Com pany, placed his sample over the other 129 entries of the hay show. Crouse, a dairyman who builds his feed program a round a basic acreage of 48 acres of hay, earlier this year showed the reserve champion hay sample at the Southeastern Pennsyl vania Hay show at Hershey.
