12—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 17, 1961 Tobacco Planting, Hay Making Head Work Parade This Week Tobacco planting contin ued to hold the spotlight on Lancaster county farms this week With over half the crop planted, many farmers are giving the fields first cultivations. Weather lias been ideal in most cases and the plants in the field are in excellent condition. The southern part of the county missed out on several of the thundershowers wh.ch hit the northern area, but crops are not yet suffering from lack of moisture. Warm nights and hot days are pushing the com crop. Weeds threatened to become a problem, but with several hot days for cultivation, most of the county fields are clean ed up and the crop is In good condition, though about a week late. Hay making continued with quite a few crops being made between showers and the forage of poor quality. Farmers reported hay cured slowly on several of the hu mid days during the past week. Ideal weather last week gave Pennsylvania farmers an opportunity to bring spring work schedules up to date, the State Crop Report ing Service said Tuesday in its weekly crop and weather summary. Weather conditions gave a boost to state vegetable pro ducers; Asparagus harvest is now practically completed except in the Erie area. Sweet com is making rapid growth. Snap beans and lima beans are dis playing better color and growth and harcesting of early Alaska variety green peas is starting in the south central section of the State. Fruit is sizing satisfactori ly and orchardists are busy mowing and spraying to con trol disease and insects. The late summer crop of potatoes in the southeast quarter of the State appears good and planting of fall po tatoes is virtually complete exdept in northern areas. The small grain crop looks good. Barley in southern and eastern sections of the State is headed and turning yellow with only a few fields In the eastern counties having some lodging. Wheat is generally headed throughout the State and condition is reported good. Oats are generally in the pre-boot stage in all areas with conditions rang ing from fair to good. Pasture conditions are good throughout the State. Hay is reported to be of good quality. There has been very little bug damage and spray ing for spittle bug has about been completed. He will represent the state in judg ing contests there.
