A series of hoses carries the chemical under pressure to the" soil at the bottom of the tines The spec ially adapted tractor ‘also lays a covering of transpar ent plastic over the area and covers the edges of the film With soil. - Two discs, one on .each side of the tool bar, open a furrow at each-side of the tobacco seed bed. From a spool mounted on the tool bar, the plastic is fed under two rubber tired wheels which push the edges of the film into the furrow where it is covered by two more discs set to throw soil toward the center of the bed. The equipment used is so s.mple that almost any mech anic could adapt any farm tractor to app.y the chemical at a very small cost for parts, but the time of application is so short it would probably not be profitable for a farm er to make up the equipment lor his own use alone. At the Henney farm, ap plication was made m about one hour. The same beds iast year required three days of labor by two men to do the steaming. The entire process With the chemical lakes only as long as is required to drive over the beds with the tractor. The manufacturer recom mends the plastic strip be left in p.ace until time to seed the bed, but the work of the chemical is comp’eted In about three days. Weed seeds and insects have been well controlled in tests. Some dis ease control also is expected from the process, but the dis tributor of the chemical would make no claims as to how much disease control could be hoped for. Henney said the cost of application of the chemical would be about equal to the cash outlay for steaming, but the labor would be less with You save money with our Texaco ■All-Star* heating oil service!
