Batt, Jr, said they reached 125 9 of the 1947-49 base period, a rise of 0 9 percent. All items except transpor tation used to compute gen eral living costs rose during this period The increase brought the 1960 level to a point 2 4 per cent Higher than 1959 Food alone went up 18 per cent In terms of pocket books, potatoes were 26 7 cents higher for a 15-pound bag at the end of the per iod than at the beginning, apples cost 4 cents more per pound and oranges were 4 2 cents more per dozen. Pork prices reflected a slump in production, and rose 5.8 cents a pound for bacon, 2.1 cents for chops. Other meats and poultry products showed similary higher prices. Only lettuce, cabbages and carrots showed reduced pri ces among fresh vegetables, and shortening, butter, and frozen haddock were also slightly lower. Housing costs, including heating, and other operating expenses, also were on the rise, 0.4 per cent above the January figure and 2 4 per cent more than April a year ago. Increased gas costs were a large factor here.
