Dairy and poultry are no exception, since declines aie found in such items as eggs, broilers. and fryers This week retail price Apple Pomace In Feed Brings Cortdemnation Apple pomace containing DDT or the residue of cer tain other pesticides is not suitable as feed for dairy animals and may not be suit able as feed for meat ani mals, the U S. Departmenhof Agriculture said today. Investigations have shown that pesticides of long resi dual effect, when properly used to control apple pests, m,ay leave residue, which are within safe tolerances on fresh apples but are concen trated many times in the po mace ' *' The use of such pomace in animal rations ipay result in the production of milk con taining small amounts of DDT or other pesticides. There is no tolerance for DDT or any-other pesticide m milk Meat animals fed pomace for extended periods may accumulate residue in their fat in excess of accept able levels. Apple pomace is the by product of apple processing for cider or vinegar. Pomace has only limited use as feed for livestock, and agricultur al officials in some States have already recommended against its use in feeds. US DA recommends that apple pomace not be used in live stock feed unless it has been determined by analysis or other means that the pomace does not contain I)DT or oth er pesticides in amounts that will result in illegal residue in milk or me,at. Use of chemical pesticides to conliol apple insects and diseases is essential for pro ducing an adequate national supply of apples with the quality demanded by con sumers.
