Jacob L. Kurtz Maintains 500 lb. Herd By Supplementing < Continued from page six) take hay and silage to the field for the milking herd. Right now, as spring pastures are slow coming, the animals are getting hay and silage'*”'outTide and only gram m the barn. There are a couple of side bene fits Chat Kurtz points out. By having the cows outside the barn, the fly problem is minimumized. Secondly it helps in keeping the barn clean when the press of field work is on. IN' THE LATE summer as the pastures dry and become short, the bunkers are used again. Grass silage made in the early spring is used in time to empty the silo for the corn crop. To utilize some of the rougher pasture land on the 180 acre farm, Kurtz keeps a small ewe and Jamb flock. He has been keeping the lambs oa until later in the sum mer rather than sell them in the pre-Easter market. The farm lies in the rough hills just west of Elizabethtown, thus lequxrmg that the bulk of the acres be used as pasture land. He has been using an artificial breeding program through the Southeastern Pennsylvania Arti ficial Breeders Cooperative. This program will continue to be utiliz ed even though he has his own bull. WHILE THE INITIAL herd of Holstein was both grade and regis tered, the bulk of the grade cows have been eliminated until only two or three are left. These will be replaced with registred heif ers as they move out of the herd. The size of the herd may be increased slightly in the future, Kurtz believes The Harrisburg dairy where he sells his milk has recently given notice that bulk tank operations will be started. To get the benefit from a bulk tank, he feels, a pipeline milker and other accessories must be added And this will mean that some more cows can be added to the herd with very little extra labor. Labor on the farm is an im portant problem with Kurtz. He is a representative for Eastern and must be away from the farm, frequently. Millport Roller Mills Lititz, R-D.4, Pa. J. C. Walker & Son S. H. ANS Egg Plants Start Certification Labeling Several Pennsylvania egg pack ing plants this week are expected to offer nearly 1 million eggs for sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania under a new state certification program. The State Department of Agri culture said the first three of 10 egg packing plants signed up for the voluntary program were ex pected to place official certifica tion labels on egg cartons begin ning Monday. THE OFFICIAL state certifica tion labels show a keystone out lined in blue and lettering in red which reads; “Pennsylvania Certi fied Graded Under State Super vision.” They will be used as a seal for the flap on each carton offered under the quality pro gram. The seal is intended to assure purchasers of the highest quality eggs offered by - the distributor, observers said. Under the Pennsylvania egg certification program the state will license a plant employee to inspect all eggs for quality and grade before the seal of quality can be affixed to the carton. THERE WILL be no additional cost to the department. The agent of the plant will be requir ed to meet department standards tor licensing egg graders. D. W. Hoover East Earl, R. D. 1. Pa.
