Haid Red Spring Gasser, Henry (except in Wisconsin and Washington), Kinney, Premier, Progress, Spmkcota, Sturgeon. Durum Golden Ball, Pehss, and Pentad White Fifty Fold, Florence, Creeson, Rex, and Sonora. These varieties were designated by the Agricultural Research Service of the U S Department of Agriculture after consultation with State Agricultural Experi ment Station personnel, agrono mists, cereal chemists, and others on state and Federal staffs. The undesirable varieties are desigated nationally except for Henry which is named as undesir able in all but the states of Wis consin and Washington Additions to the list of undesirable varieties include Fifty Fold, Florence, Gas ser, Greeson, Kanueen, Kinney, Nured, and Seabreeze. These designated varieties were found to be undesirable for com mercial food use. The discount was adopted in the support opera-, tion to discourage their produc tion and lessen the possibility of U.S. wheat of inferior quality finding its way into domestic and export channels. Representatives of crop improvement associations have strongly urged the action to help improve the quality of over all U.S. wheat production. Acreages of these “undesir able” varieties habe been declin ing in recent yea'fs, Department officials said, and the discount in the price support program is cred ited with speeding up this trend. Application of the discount of 20 cents per bushel to producer support rates will be the same as under the 1957 operation. The price-support regulations for the 1958 program will provide for producer certification regarding undesirable varieties similar to the certifications made by produc ers that they produced the wheat and produced it in the current ci op year. Because these varieties are difficult to determine from threshed samples of wheat, the identification of the variety going under price support will be the producer’s responsibility based on his knowledge of the varieties he seeded and harvested. Even though some of the undesirable varieties might have protein con tent high enough for a premium, no protein premiums will apply to any of the undesirable varie ties in determining the loan rate. Similarly, no amber or hard am ber durum premiums will apply FOR FALL SEED ING RYE OATS BARLEY WHEAT Dairyman Computes Average Milk Use Ever wonder how much milk a person drinks in a lifetime’ Joe 1 Stein, extension dairy husband man at the University of Nevada, says that the average, person drinks the total production from eight years milking of the aver age c0w—48,710 pounds of milk This means that today’s baby, with a lifetime expectancy of 68 8 years, will drink about 12,000 quarts of milk Mr Stein further says that during its lifetime the baby will eat three or four timesi its weight in butter, slightly less cheeseO, and 1,032 quart of ice cream s Gd—Meat Production Up in May Red meat production in com mercial slaughter plants during May totaled 2,163 million pounds, according to latest figures of the Crop Reporting Board. Now...market hogs in 4Vs months New Purina feeding program weans pigs at six weeks .... grows pigs to 190 lbs. in 4 2 /3 months.., cuts feed costs 4% ...1 lb. of pork for every 3.26 lbs. of feed, from weaning to market... conditions sows faster for next farrowing. Every year more proof piles up that hogs should be fed according to age and weight requirements. Young pigs use feed differently than do oloer hogs. They need more pro tein ... more vitamins ... more of the expensive parts of the ration. But, as pigs grow, they become mote efficient users of carbohydrates—the less costly part of rations. The pro portion of cheaper carbohydrates can be rapidly increased. Tests at the Purina Research Farm showed that this new program cut feed costs an average of 4% below any previous Purina Program . . . produced each pound of pork on only 3.261b5. offeed fromweaningto market. It also gave sows the chance to recover faster from farrowing and nursing. Sows were ready to breed FEED PURINA.. .YOU CAN DEPEND ON THE CHECKERBOARD Warren Sickman Pequea S. H.
