Penn Slate Has Booklet on Methods Pioduction of Maiket Turkeys is a coarse of ten lessons offered through the mail by the Pennsyl vania State University. The course deals with the breeding, brooding, feeding and marketing of turkeys. Charac teristics of the different varieties together with the market advant ages of each are well explained. There is a lesson on vices, para sites and diseases. Harry Kauff man, professor of poultry hus bandry extension at the univer sity is the author. Lancaster County had 285 farms producing 236,000 turkeys in 1954, according to the U. S. Census of Agriculture, an m ciease of 158 per cent from 1949. A small flock of turkeys can yield a substantial income. Two hundred to 300 birds fit well as an enterprise on daily or general farms while a dozen or 20 birds makes an interesting backyard proiect. Homes have 10 Million Acres Signed in Wheat Acreage Reserve WASHINGTON (USDA) Through Oct. 19, wheat farmeis had signed 195,299 agreements covering, 10,124,319 acres under the Soil Bank’s 1957 winter wheat Acreage Reserve program, the U. S Department of Agu culture announced today. If the farmers signing agreements com ply with the requirements of the program, they will be eligible for a maximum of $187,819,709 in Acreage Reserve payments. Based on reports from State Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation (ASC) offices in the 36 States of the commercial wheat area, these figures com pare with 193,253 agreements, covering 9,051,292 acres, for a total of $170,147,035, reported through October 12, 1955.
