Horoscopes courtesy Horoscopes.com Book Reviews A Different Tite for Diin By Kalleen McLaughlin- Lion's Eye Staff Writer- kmm6327@psu.edu Everyone remembers that fateful night in August of 1997, when Princess Diana of Whales’ was killed in that horrific car crash. But what if she wasn’t killed? What if it was all staged? That’s what British novelist, Monica Ali imagines in her book “Untold Story”. Ali creates a world in which Princess Diana did not die, but, in fact, staged her death to escape from the spotlight and the always criticizing public. The book starts off by telling the story of a woman named Lydia, who has moved from England to America and plans to start a new life in a town called Kensington. She meets a circle of friends, whom she becomes friendly with over the years and takes up a job at a pet shop where she tends to all the dogs. While you are learning about this mysterious Lydia, the book switches to journal entries from a man named Law- rence who is dying of cancer, and also happens to be Princess Diana’s old secretary. Lawrence details how he and Diana devised a plan for her to get away from all her ongoing stress due to her fame, and how she becomes Lydia. Her “death” does not happen on that August night, but happens on a trip with her boyfriend on a yacht, where Diana takes a morning swim and never returns. Lawrence then stages the car crash for the public to believe her death. Diana’s newfound freedom comes at a price, when she is never to see her boys, William and Harry, again and she resorts to following their lives through magazine articles. While all this is going on, a sleazy reporter who is putting a book together for the tenth anniversary of her death, catches on to her scheme and tries to out her. “Untold Story” hit the bookshelves just weeks before the Royal Wedding was to take place. The public’s fascination with the Royals was undoubt- edly on a high. In my opinion, I think it was more of an insult to the family for this book to come out around Diana’s son’s wedding. I, myself am a huge Untold Story Princess Diana fan, which is why I picked up this book. I was ex- pecting something completely differ- ent from what I actually read. The story was slow and left you wondering what it was about for the first couple chapters. I found myself bored with it after about five chapters into it. Also, Ali didn’t do that great of a job describing our beloved Princess. In the book, Diana seems emotionless and cold, whereas in real life, everyone knew her as a kind, generous woman. As I said before, [ am a huge Princess Diana fan, which is why I decided to read this, but after reading it, I'm left feeling like it is an insult to her memory. I’ve never read any of Monica Ali’s other novels, so I do not know how good of a writer she is, but I think handling a story as sensitive as the Princess’ death, is a little too much. How must her family, most of all her sons, - feel knowing there is now a book detailing how their mother could have staged her death? It is all fiction, as the author states time and time again, but would you like it if someone wrote a story about how your mother could have abandoned you in such a way? I’m not saying that you shouldn’t go out and read this book, but if you are a fan of the Royals or Princess Diana, then maybe you should skip this one. I give “Untold Story” three out of five stars.
