Marcel Carter was a fellow student of Penn State who had bone cancer. In 1991, a basketball game was held to raise money for his treatments. In January 1993, he died. However, the games still continue. The money goes to the American Cancer Society and is used for juvenile research. The results of the tournament during its first year were very positive. There were many people who came. However, last year’s tournament did not get as much support. Erica Parks, member of the Black Student League, says, “I am hoping to see a lot more people this year.” This year’s tournament will feature Q102, Cheyney University, Penn State Delco, Penn State Ogontz, And West Chester University. Also, there will be a step show and performances by the American Defenders and rap group Bad to the Bone. The general admission is $5.00 and $3.00 with student LD. Erica Parks quotes, “I'd like to see a good turnout at the 3rd Annual Marcel Carter Basketball Tournament because the proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. Itis also a chance for Penn State students to get to know area college university students and have a good time.” Another Penn State Delco fundraiser is the Wheel Chair Basketball Game, which will be held on April 20, 1994 in the Delco Gym. It will begin at 7:30. There will be no admission fees, however, donations will be greatly appreciated. Faculty, students, and staff members are invited to attend. Wheelchairs will be provided. All proceeds will go to the PVA (Paralyzed Veterans Association) and to CAPE (Child Abuse Prevention Effort). Sign up sheets are available at Kathy Shorter’s desk, 106 Main. Rita Varano, SGA vice-president, may also be contacted. Men's Club Volleyball Shows Talent and Real Teamwork By Tom Pfleger The PSU Men's Club Volleyball team travelled to PSU Berks for a series of league matches, Saturday, March 19, and proved quite competitive in the SE PA League. Only six team members made the trip, leaving no room for substitutions and the shuffling of positions. These reasons may have contributed to the slow start the team got off to. New positions caused new formations, and the confusion caused the Delco Lions to be slow to the net, thus dropping the first game to Montgomery County Community College. The tides changed in the second game. A few nice defensive plays kept the game close, and late in the game PSU Delco overpowered MCCC winning the game 16-14 and rolling on from there en route to a 3-1 win in the first match of the day for Delco. Earlier in the day, PSU Berks knocked off MCCC in a tight match. DCCC and Central Penn did not show up for the tournament. This meant that the third match of the day between PSU Berks and PSU Delco, a rematch of last years CCAC final at UP, would decide the tournament winner. Berks handily won the first game 15-4, but Delco came back to capture game two. Berks once again took the lead winning a tight third game. Delco didn’t wither, playing an excellent fourth game, forcing a fifth and deciding game. During the intermission between the fourth and fifth games, a Berks player moaned, “It's that Delco jinx again.” It was not to be though, perhaps suffering from fatigue, Delco couldn’t hang tight, losing 15-9 and settling for second place. Lady Lions Look To Next Season By John Tunstall The Lady Lions ended the ‘94 season with a tough home loss against Mount Alto. The women fell a little short in a season that had its ups and downs. The game was very close and enertaining, with both teams playing strong end-to-end defense. The Mount Alto players had more fire power, pulling ahead late in the fourth period. The Lady Lions finished strong, but the game ended with a 54-48 victory for Mount Alto. The Delco women battled with a tenacious defense that held the powerful offense of the Mount Alto hoopsters. Scranton went on to become tournament champions. .. The Lion's finished with a 12-13 record overall, and 9-6 in the league, good enough for fourth place in the conference. The team had hoped to advance to the finals to match last year’s regular season undefeated performance. Shawn Cordes, who led the team in shooting percentage (48%) said, "This year was fun, yet disappointing. I think we had a good team and could have done even better." Next year, the Lions will lose Jeff Danzi, the leading point scorer in Delco history, but will be returning five players: Ethan Barrett, Ted Gunther, Jimmy King, Andre Harris, and Jayson Morovich. Look for a strong '94-'95 season. £ Personal Ad 2) Ken: See you if you get up to Main in the spring (and if I'm still there). Party here and don't do work. Keep smokin’ at Stratt's (A.K.A. Rat Boy). Steve = = the ball most of the game. But the players began running out of steam in the second half as errant passes created transition baskets for the opposing team. The Lady Lions finished the season with a 5-11 overall record and a 5-3 league record. The women played very well versus other Penn State schools, but were overmatched by non-league opponents. This was a very young team with a first year coach. Look for the the Delco Lions to rebound next season with a better year. “This was a year of firsts for a lot of us,” said coach Mary Varano. “It was a year to learn. Look for this experience to pay off next season.” - Horoscopes - (Continued from page 6) CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Whatever negative trends that have affected you in the past couple of months should not come in the way of your future goals.
