On Friday, January 15th, Tony Brown, host of “Tony Brown’s Jour- nal,” was the keynote speaker as part of a day of remembrance honoring the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This day was sponsored by the BSL (Black Student League) of Penn State Delaware County Campus. Tony Brown gave a heart warming speech to a predominatly black audience. His speech had a lot of truth in it, and also portrayed much of what Dr. King believed in. However, after speaking with Brown I had second thoughts as to whether or not he lived what he preached. Dr. King believed in helping anyone in need, and if it was in his power to do so, he would. But, in Brown’s case the issue isn’t whether or not he believes in helping people, but whether he believes in helping at all. Let me tell you what happened to me. Shortly after his speech I talked to Brown and asked him if he had any advice for a young black journalist, but I received no response. His response was totally unexpected, simply because of the type of speech that he gave. “I have nothing else to say,” he replied as he stared at the ceiling. “I've said all I had to say in my speech.” Yet he appeared to find the time to talk to adults, such as administrators and faulty Later, another opportunity arose for me to speak with him alone, and I took full advantage of it. Once again I requested specific advice from Brown, and once again my request meant nothing. I received the same reply. In other words, “No time for you, Jack.” From my point of view, this not only misrepresents Dr. King, but it’s a breach of good manners. I am very disappointed in Brown’s actions. This recent incident re- minded me of a similar incident, however, the response was in no way the same. I remember speaking with Congressman Bill Gray and the Senior Editor of the Philadelphia Daily News, Chuck Stone. Both men, as busy as they are, had encouraging words to say to me. Both took time out to talk to me , a young aspiring journalist. Surely if they can take time out to speak with me and give encouraging words then Tony Brown can do the same. I didn’t know what to expect of Brown, but what I did receive was in bad taste. Important people must realize that anything that they do will have a positive or negative effect on a person’s life, particularly a young person’s. In Tony Brown's case, his actions left a negative effect on a young journalist. He spoke to us about Dr. King’s dream but failed to live up to it. Have a problem? Need some advice? . Ask Orlov? This could be a prosperous year for all of the Penn State Delaware County students, buff only if we abide by the rules. As with any group of people, there are always a few that will disobey the rules, and at Delco those students unfortu- nately exist. Towards the end of the spring semester of 1987 acts of vandalism have been dis: covered in the Library/Learning Center. These unnecessary acts were a terrible way to end the year. Itis our responsibility as responsible adults “our” campus property. As a proud student of the Penn State Delco campus I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the “civilized” students at Penn State Delco, and to the vandals, “There is ng room for nonsense here”. We are in college td build, not to destroy. It certainly hurts me when I hear about destructive acts on campus. Will you join me in the fight to save our school? ff ) THE LION'S EYE Pennsylvania State University Delaware County Campus Media, Pa. 19063 Vol. XVIII, No. 1 March 1988 Editor-in-Chief. .....................
