The Highacres Collegian Marchetti assumes post by Jayne Ann Bugda Mr. Joseph J. Marchetti has recently taken the position of Assis tant Dean of Student Affairs at the Hazleton Campus of The Penn sylvania State University. Mr. Marchetti is a graduate of West-Hazleton High School. He at tended Wilkes College where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree In Biology and Psychology and his Master of Science degree in Education. Mr. Marchetti also did additional gradtiate`work towards a Doctorate in Education Leadership from Boston University. , Prior to his position as Assistant Dean of Students Affairs at the Hazleton Campus, Mr. Marchetti served as Assistant Dean of Stu dent Affairs at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. Prior to that position he was Director of Housing at Wilkes College, Wilkes-Barre, Pa. His professional membership includes: a member of _The Na tional Association of Student Personnel Administrators and a member of The Pennsylvania Association of. Student Financial Aid Administration. Mr. Marchetti is active with the American Heart Association as an instructor/trainee of Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR pro gram) and as a first-aid instructor for the American Red Cross. His past community involvement includes serving on the Board of Trustees for the March of Dimes, Northeast, Pa. chapter, and a member of the executive committee of the American Heart Associa tion. Mr. Marchetti was recently selected as "Outstanding Young Man of America" for 1981 by the National Jaycees. The award honors professional achievement and exceptional service. Robert Sabatino fills vacancy Mr. Robert L. Sabatino is filling the position of Administrative Assistant of Academic Affairs at the Hazleton Campus of The Pennsylvania State University. The position was recently left va cant by Mr. James White, who has accepted a position with the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company. An alumnus of Wilkes College, Mr. Sabatino received his Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education (History/English). He also at tended the University of Scranton where he received his Master's of Science in Counseling. He also held a teaching position at the Union High School in Union, New Jersey: Recently, Mr. Sabatino was a counselor for the Division of Counseling and a Counselor in Career Development and Place ment at the Wilkes-Barre campus of The Pennsylvania State University, until accepting his position at the Hazleton Campus. News At FGA meeting David reviews state of campus On September 8, the Faculty Government Association held their first meeting of the term. The meeting was opened by Mr. Richard McKinstry, FGA chairman. Dr. William David, director of the campus, intro duced the new members of the faculty and administration. The new members are Mr. Richard Tyce, Librarian; Mr. Richard Scheardy, Chemistry; Mr. Steven Kroll Smith,' Sociology; Ms. Pat Dreisbach, MLT; Mr. Don Tambasco, Engineering; Ms. Stephanie Hockensmith, French; Ms. Marlene Giers, Mathematics; Mr. James Mcßeardy, Engineering; Mr. James Pino and Mr. Frank Lang gowski, Reading, and‘Mr. Robert Sabatino, Administrative Assis tant for Academic Affairs and Mr. Joseph Marchetti, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs. Dr. David also mentioned that Dr. Anthony Galanti, has been pro moted to full professor. Mr. McKinstry was then presented his chair for twenty-. five years of service to the University; Dr. David made the presentation. Dr. Eugene Miller spoke to the group for the Sub-committee on honors. Dr. Miller reported that the honors program includes six sophomores from last year, eight additional sophomores added to the program this year along with Highacres student receives award Tyce joins campus library staff by Alane Bofish Richard Tyce has been named librarian on the Hazleton Campus following the retirement of Mrs. Mary Ferry. Tyce attended Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut where he completed 12 credit hours of Ger man. He then attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York where he studied government and history, and later transferred to the University of Pittsburgh (Graduate School of Liberty In formation Science) where he graduated with a M.L.S. (Masters in Library Science). While he attended the University of Pittsburgh, he was employed ten or eleven freshmen At the meeting Dr. David gave his annual State of the Campus, Address. The address covered such topics as personnel changes, developments in programs on campus and the merger of conti nuing education and resident in struction and developments in the physical plant. Changes in personnel were Mr. Park Lenhart, Director of Conti nuing Education, who has been transferred to the Shenango Valley Campus. Replacing Mr. Lenhart is Mr. Larry Gingrich. Also Ms. Cheryl Hinkle has left her position in the business of fice; replacing her is Ms. Carol Nause. Dr. David informed the group on the following developments of campus programs. The Physical Therapy program, which is under the direction of Mrs. Suzanne G. Schwager, was initiated during the summer. The campus is now seeking to have the program ac credited. In the Medical Laboratory Technician program (MLT), the assignments are ex tending to the Berwick Hospital. Dr: David said that ar rangements are being made through Continuing Education to offer educational programs at the nuclear installation in Berwick. He also noted the initiation of the P.M. program this fall. The P.M. program is a core group of as a library assistant at the Henry Clay Frick Fine Arts Library and later as an assistant at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science Library at the same University. Upon graduation he accepted the posi tion of reference librarian at the Ulrich State University Library in Dayton, Ohio. Two years later he was promoted:to head of the Reference Department and held that position until taking his cur rent post at Hazleton. Mr. Tyce has been involved in many committees and organiza tions related to library work over the last several years. Among these are the Academic Library November 1981-3 courses scheduled for late after noon and evenings. There is cur rently an enrollment of one hundred-twenty students in the P.M. program. Dr. David also noted that the Hazleton Campus will be one of the six campuses to introduce a new Associate Degree program. This will include correspondence courses and television delivered courses. Also, the campus will of fer a pilot program for non resident degree in nutrition. In his report on new developments in the Physical Plant, Dr. David reported that new chairs have been installed in the Highacres room. He gave the following up-date on other renovations around the campus. Parking lot A is being re-surfaced and lot B is being relined. Also a new gravel lot was installed by the Physical Educa tion building. The renovation of the snack bar in the Commons to a French Cafe style took place over the summer months. This was the first step toward a total renovation of the Commons, which is slated for 1984 when the Hazleton Campus will be celebrating their fiftieth anniver sary. Finally, a Laboratory for the MLT program has been set-up in the former exercise room on the first floor of the Physical Educa tion building. Mario Rosato was given the Eric A. and Josephine Walker Award for the Highacres Campus at the end of Spring Term, 1981. Two weeks later he was Judged outstanding among all branch campus winners and was presented the all-state award by former PSU president, Mr. Eric A. Walker. The award honors students displaying excellent examples of leadership, scholarship, com munity service, and promotion of campus activities. Rosato was vice president of Highacres' SGA, president of HCAC, president of the Par nassus Honor Society, a VITA volunteer, and chairman of the March of Dimes "Walk America." Association, American Associa tion of University Professors, American Society of Indexers, Beta Phi Mu, Dayton-Miami Valley Consortium, OCLC In terlibrary Loan Committee, OLA Interlibrary Loan Code Revision Committee, and the University of Pittsburgh/Carnegie Library Schools Alumni Association. In these organizations Tyce acted in many chair and leadership posi tions. The new librarian has also worked on two publications: Abstract of English Studies, published in 1972, and Edward Albee; a Bibliography which will be published later this year.
