* HIGH ACRES COLLEGIAN * Monday, January 29,1979 By AMY ABBEY Staff Writer Everitt Binns is the 1978 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award given out by the Greater Hazleton Jaycees. Schneider Enjoying Retirement; What Now? After sadly seeing Mr. Schneider retire from his position as Assistant Director of the Hazleton Campus of Penn State, we are happy to hear that he is enjoying his retirement. Mr. Schneider is now catching up on neglected tasks at home and doing a survey tabulation Assistant Dean Receives Man of the Year Award The D.S.A. is awarded to the man between the ages of 18 and 35 who has given the most ser vice to his family, church, com munity and nation through his work and activities. Binns is now the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs. He is also the campus director of financial aid, and the director of cultural programming and student activities. Being director of student ac tivities he advises the Student Union Board. Through his work with this and other student groups, Binns has been directly and indirectly responsible for many community-oriented even ts, such as the annual Needy Children’s Christmas Party, and the March of Dimes Walk-A- Thon. He also serves as a budget for the Pottsville Club of which he is Secretary. He is also en joying his AM-FM radio with stereo which he received from the Highacres Community. On December 20, an open house social of faculty and staff was given for Mr. Schneider in the administration building at the onset of his retirement. Many old Mends and retired in structors from the Hazleton Campus also attended, including Mrs. Elizabeth Bodensten, Professor of German from State College, and Mr. Andrew Kafka, Professor of Speech. The gift was presented to him at the social. Mrs. Reichart, Mr. Schneider’s secretary of almost 20 years also , misses him very much and remembers him not only as her boss but as a dear Mend. She felt very privileged to be his secretary. She remembers his good sense of humor which not Hazleton Campus Penn State University advisor to the Student Govern ment Association. The art exhibits held in the campus library and the speakers who have lectured at Highacres: have been coordinated by Binns.. He represents the campus to the. Greater Hazleton Fine Arts Council and was primarily responsible for bringing the Creative Arts Festival to its present home at the campus. He is now serving as president of: the council. Binns is currently an active member of the Conynham Fire Company and a member of the; West Hazleton Ambulance Association. Binns received his B.A. in history from Penn State in 1972. and his Master of Education degree in Counselor Education in 1973, also from Penn State. too many people got a chance to know about, also his quiet and reserved manner; she remem bers how he always spoke well of his colleagues and never had a derogatory remark about anyone. His main concern, was the students and faculty, which he cared for very much. In his leisure time, Mr. Schneider enjoys music, preferably the big band sounds. Hopefully, his gift will come to good use and he will continue to enjoy his retirement. The search for Mr. Schneider’s replacement is still in progress and is now narrowed down to 3 candidates. All the candidates have very high credentials for the job, which will make the decision tough. The candidates are Dr. Michael J. Card amor e, Associate Professor of Physics at the Schuylkill Campus of Penn State; Dr. Wallace Watson, ' Chairperson- of the Liberal Volume 14 Number 4 Three fourths of his way through graduate school, Binns came to the Hazleton Campus looking for a position on the staff. He was very impressed with the system. After being in terviewed by Dr. David and Dean McCallus he began his career in 1973 in college ad ministration. He served as Residence Hall Coordinator for three years in addition to his ac tivities and cultural program ming duties. When asked why he was so in volved in so many different social and academic organizations, Binns replied, "I enjoy helping people.” The Distinguished Service Award Banquet honoring Everitt Binns will be held Saturday, January 27th, at Gas Genetti Motor Lodge. Congratulations Mr. Binns! Studies Division, Park College, Kansas City, Missouri; and our own Dr. James J. Staudenmeier, Registrar, Division of Un dergraduate Studies. During the process of in terviewing, all three will spend a day here talking to Dr. David, faculty and students. An open reception for all to get acquain ted will be held on Thursday, January 25, in the Highacres room. Mark Rovito, President of the Student Government Association, is also on the Sear ch Committee and will talk to each candidate for about an hour. The candidates will also be interviewed at University Park, where the other half of the Sear ch Committee is located. Following the interview period, all comments from the Search Committee, faculty, and students will be considered and (Continued on Page 8)
