- The Highacres Collegian, April 29, 1977 COLLEGIAN PERSONALITY: Harold Michael is more than a maintainence man and groundskeeper here at High acres. He has been here for 28 years and knows the cam pus better than anyone. Michael was born in the Bloomsburg area and attended high school there. "I was a structural steel worker in my younger years," Michael com mented. In 1942 he joined the military. After leaving the military in 1945, he learned about a job, through an uncle, as a chauffer and handyman for a Mr. Donald Murkle. "I didn't feel as though I wanted to start climb ing right away..." Michael re flected. In the Spring of 1946, he started his new job on the Nor winds Estate, which immediately adjoined the Highacres Estate. "I actually expected to go back to rigging steel," Michael said. For four years he served Donald Murkle, who owned both estates, as "sort of a jack-of-all-trades and a chauffer." At that time Michael was convinced by the new director to stsy on as a maintainence man and began his new job on April 1 of that year. Michael describes the Uni versity's early years as "quite a family set up; it was a won derful relationship. At that time we had a starting time but never had a quitting time. We went home when the work was done." As time went on, and High acres became a little more com plex, Michael stayed with the University because, "You be came involved in pension plans and fringe benefits. I enjoyed this place. I really feel like I'm part of it and it's a part of me." Michael has one son who was born on the campus, while Michael was working for the Murkles. Michael is looking for ward to his retirment in two years. "I don't think I'm going to get a rocking chair," he commented. Mr. Michael enjoys hunting and is a certified elec trician. * C “ What’s Happening.'?! Graduation exercises for Associate Degree Students will be held on May 27 at 7 P.M.
