Eric Walker Nominees Chosen Nomination forms for the Eric talker Award are present ly circulating on campus* The Eric Walker Award is annually presented to the sophormore student who, in the opinion of the selection committee, best exhibits those traits of outstanding scholar ship and leadership character istics as stated in the criter ia for the award. The purpose of the award is "to recognize Commonwealth Campus students whose outstand ing qualities-of character, scholarship,,leadership and citizenship have been directed into programs and services that have positively influ enced fellow students and have contributed to the prestige and well-being of their cam pus, and, hence, to the repu— PARNASSUS MEMBERS The Parnassus Honor So ciety, affliliated with the Keystone Society at the University Park Campus, is seeking worthy inductees for membership* Students who meet the minimal requirements (2.5 cumulative average, membership in two student organizations, and at least third term stand ing) will be pledged at the Society's annual Spring meet ing fox recruits. Parnassus was founded in 1954 hy a Hazleton student and it has a chapter on almost ev ery Penn State campus includ ing University Park. Among * its activities are; All U- Day, student of the Tear bal loting and award giving. Par nassus Society mem hers are the "doers" on every campus. Re cognition is shown to its mem bers at the Awards Banquet and Parnassus emblems are dis tributed at a later meeting. All Interested students who meet the above qualifica tions are asked to fill out their names, majors, and other pertinent information and desposit it in the Colle- tation of the University as a whole." Each chartered organi zation, the faculty and the administration were to have nominated at least one student for the award. The selection committee to chose the winner of the honor consists of Dr. William David, Campus Direc tor, Joseph McCallus, Dean of Student Affairs, and William Schneider, Assistant Director for Resident Instruction. The finalist from the Hazleton Campus will be judged with finalists from the Allen town, Scranton, Schuylkill and Wilkes-Barre Campuses. The re gional finalist will be judged with three other regional fin alists at University Park for the award. lied I She Belles-Lettres Liter ary and Cultural Society is presently in the process of planning two reading festi vals! one for area high school students and the other for students at Highacres. The Belles-Lettres Society is devoted to spread ing culture throughout the campus. Officers include Donald Serfass, president, Donna Marie Baver, vice pres ident and Christie Tito, secretary. Prof. Andrew Kafka is the club's advisor. The annual high school reading festival is open to high schools in the Greater Hazleton area and outlying districts. This year it is to be held April 18 in the Library. Competition in the high school festival is arranged in three categories: prose, poetry and drama. Each high school taking part in the festival will send a represen tative to perform in each of these areas. First, second, The Highacres Collegian. Submissions are in the process of being graded, but photographs and draw ings may still be submitted until Friday, April 11. (And, if you hurry, late submissions may also be con sidered.) Co-Editors for the mag azine are Donna Marie Baver and Donald Serf ass, with the members of the Editorial Board as follows: Christie Tito, Christine Slivka, Dor een Mayo and Marvin Swantek. Hefresh ments will be served in the waiting period while the jud ges make their decisions. The college reading fes tival is to be held May 8, marking the beginning of the Fine Arts Festival to be held for the first time this year on campus. The competition in the college festival id not divided as in the high school festival. Four awards will be presented, equal in merit, and the categories of prose, poetry and drama will be presented together. Awards will not be given in accordance to the cate gory. Any college-student interested in participating in the festival should contaot either Prof. Kafka or any of the officers. Selections can range from 8 to 10 minutes in length and are not restrict ed in subject matter.
