April 2(). ]()()() Four Capital Times By Matthew McKeown Capital Times Editor Four members of the 1999-2000 Capital Times staff were honored on April 9 at the annual Student Awards Convocation ceremony. Reporters Barbara Roy and Kristy Pipher, business manager Serena Silverman, and contributor/tech wizard Daniel McClure, were each given awards for outstanding service in their respective fields. Silverman was given the Eric A. & Josephine S. Walker Award. The award is given to a graduat ing PSH senior in recognition of outstanding character, scholarship, leadership and citizenship. Silverman, a humanities busi ness major, is also the president of International Affairs Association (lAA). She said she got involved with lAA because she believed in its principles. "The more involved I got, the more I liked it," Silverman said. In addition to her duties as Cap Times business manager, she created a billing and filing system and organized all the financial records for the newspaper. She is also considering joining the Peace Corps. McClure was given the Gerald Brey Award for Structural Design They extended the hours at the library and the CUB, and they gave the administration a vote of confidence to replace the com puters in three labs. “We also established a work ing relationship between the stu dents and the administration,” Lee said of his proudest accom plishment as head of SGA. “That’s something that didn’t exist at all until I took over.” In her nomination letter, Dr. Janet Widoff, director of student affairs, credited Lee with revital izing campus life at PSH through his work as coordinator of the Educational Opportunity Program for the Student Assistance Center. He has organized several events like the Martin Luther King Day celebration, the “Voices of Africa” concert, and “Gospelrama.” He also coordinated “Born in the Spirit,” an exhibit in the library’s Morrison Gallery featur ing the artwork of Ted Ellis. Lee’s presidential duties also required him to serve on several college committees. He sat on the Staffers Honored At Ceremony and Construction Engineering Technology Outstanding Senior Designer. The award is given in recognition of academic excellence and outstand ing leadership to seniors in SDCET. "I'm honored the faculty select ed me," McClure said. McClure, a structural design and construction/engineering tech nology (SDCET) major, will grad uate next month. He said he might continue his education in computer science, McClure joined the staff last fall. His irreverent sense of humor, which kept the atmosphere of the Cap Times office light, was evident in his contributions to the April Fools edition. "My favorite things I've done are writing the police blotter, the calendar and the 'Are You Rokken?’ article for the April Fools issue," McClure said. He has also co-written movie reviews with his fiancee, Nicole Burkholder. Kristy Pipher was listed among the Who's Who of College Students. She was very involved with on-campus activities. She was humanities senator for SGA and chaired several committees. "I feel it's very important that PSH Board of Advisers and the Student Activity Fee Allocation Committee, among others. He also held a seat on the College Affairs Committee, which meets bimonthly to evalu ate the curriculum so that it can better address community needs. The outgoing SGA leader also shares his time with the commu nity outside of PSH. Since the fall, he has worked on communi ty outreach initiatives to help pro mote math and science education among women and minorities. Lee is also an active member of his church. Reverend Clarice Chambers of the Antioch Tabernacle United Holy Church of America in Harrisburg said, “He is now working with the computer program and assisting in setting up the summer program for the youth. He leads by exam ple,” she said of Lee. “He will only accept the best for himself and others.” PSH faculty and administra tors who nominated Lee for the Hetzel award also saluted him and his accomplishments. “In all my years of working students become actively involved within clubs and organizations on campus," Pipher said. Dr. John Leathers, interim provost and dean, had high praise for the first student he met when he came to campus in July. “He is a student who brings a unique sense of maturity and pro priety to Penn State Harrisburg,” Leathers said. “The SGA was one of the most active, if not the most active, organization on campus under his leadership. He sets high standards in an unassuming manner,” Leathers continued. Added Widoff, “Roderick rep resents those returning adult stu dents who successfully combine academic, community service, employment, and family respon sibilities.” A Florida native, Lee served 11 years as a staff sergeant in the tionships with other students, facul ty and staff," Pipher added. Pipher graduated in December with a communications degree. She hopes to get a job with the state and wants to get her master' degree in public administration. Barbara Roy was presented with the Penn State Harrisburg Alumni Society Graduating Senior Award. The award is given to a graduat ing student who exhibited academic and social leadership at the college. "I was very surprised and thrilled to have won," Roy said. Roy, who also graduated in December with a communications degree, was a reporter and editor for the newspaper for two years. She also the public relations officer for SGA and chaired the PR committee. Roy was on the Tarnhelm staff from 1998 to 1999. She is currently enrolled in PSH's master's of humanities program. "Attending Penn State has been a revitalizing experience. I have loved being involved with the school and meeting new people," Roy continued. Ken Lopez, an ex-reporter for The Capital Times, was also named as a Who's Who Among College Students. Army. After coming to Harrisburg four years ago, he graduated from HACC in May 1998. He will complete his bache lor’s degree in Marketing and Information Systems this sum mer. He will begin work this fall on two master’s degrees: one in Business Administration and one in Science and Information Systems. Lee would like to be a market ing manager or a database admin istrator. He would also like to teach one course a semester as an adjunct faculty member at an area college. His area of interest is market ing and business courses, with an emphasis on the use of informa tion technology in either disci pline. Lee attributes his success thus far to his military experience and his year as SGA president. “I saw this as an opportunity to go in, take charge, fix SGA, and leave it alone,” he explained. “That’s why I didn’t run again. But I’m grateful for this experi- ence.”
