From Our Readers DVAM Thanks Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students of Penn State Harrisburg for making Domestic Violence Awareness Month so successful on our campus, As you may or may not know, this is the first year that any recognition was paid to this national event at PSH. The DVAM Committee (con sisting of Jessica Swanson, Carol Obando and myself) organized all of the events in about two weeks. We had many more ideas but time and manpower restricted what we could do. Throughout the month I received a great deal of positive feedback from stu dents and faculty. I would like to challenge the entire PSH community to follow this lead, to get involved and be a part of next year’s planning. At this time I would like to thank Jessica and Carol for working with me to put these activities together. I would also like to thank Dr. Toni Dupont-Morales, Dr. Holly Angelique and Dr. Carol Nechemias for supporting our work. I also want to thank the staff assistants in both the Applied Behavioral Science and Public Policy departments for helping us with room reservations and photocopying. A great deal of thanks goes to Janet Widoff and the staff assis tants in the Student Activities Office as well for the support and guidance they provided the com mittee. Steve Hevner and Val Duhig in the media relations office deserve our thanks for adding our events to the This Week and publicizing those events off cam pus. And last, but certainly not least, I want to thank all of the presenters involved in the DVAM activities, as well as those agencies who supplied rib bons and information for the information table. I could not conclude this letter without thanking The Capital Times. They covered all DVAM events as well as donating the space for the signature ad. Our goal was to bring awareness to this campus and clearly this would not have been possible without the media coverage pro vided by The Capital Times. A heartfelt thanks goes out to all of you who got involved and became more aware. Sincerely, Angela L. Keen Oct. 26, 1999 Nice Job Editor: Just wanted to tell you what a great job I think you are doing with The Capital Times this semester! Margaret DeGrange Public Affairs Oct. 18, 1999 Profile Opinion Part II Editor: I think it is an excellent idea to publish interviews of new faculty members, but I am concerned about the information contained in them. I have read the profiles of Dr. Jessica Dorman and Dr. Werner Steger, and in both cases, the writer has emphasized personal characteristics over professional qualifications, scholarly achieve ments, and research interests. Perhaps it is time for you and your staff to consider the purpose of such interviews, as well as your primary audience students. What do students want to know about new faculty members in order to make decisions about courses to take, advisors to choose, and potential thesis com mittee members to approach? It seems clear that students will read about the new faculty to learn which courses they will teach and what their areas of expertise and research interests are. Students may decide to discuss the possibility of taking one of their courses or even asking them to serve on Master’s Committees - - on the basis of the published interview. Personal information eye color, age, living arrangements - will not assist students in making such decisions. No doubt the inter viewer had good intentions; how ever, I find the inclusion of such personal information irrelevant and counterproductive. It is my sincere hope that when I read about Dr. Gennari, who is most likely the subject of the next profile, I will not learn his age, hair color, or favorite sport. Dr. Cheri Louise Ross Assoc. Professor of Humanities and English Education Program Coordinator, English and English Education Oct. 25, 1999 Room for Sartwell in the New Library? Editor: I am writing because I am extremely disappointed in the Heindel Library. I find it odd that Penn State Harrisburg employs an intelligent, well spoken, published author, yet none of his books are to be found in the Heindel Library. Crispin Sartwell is the author of three books and numerous articles. When a search on the CAT is done for Crispin Sartwell, I am greeted with three titles found. With fur ther exploration, I find that none of these copies are shelved in the Harrisburg campus’ library. The first thought that comes to my mind is why? Why is it that we must use the interlibrary loan system to gain access to literature that has been published by a mem ber of the faculty at our own cam pus? When the new, multi-million dollar library opens in the spring, I wish to see Sartwell’s books. Sincerely, Kerry Monaco Communications major Oct. 26, 1999 r _ i captimes@psu. edu Hot Damn, Ma'am!
