CAPITAL TIMES, October 26, 1990 Miller's Corner "J " the Greek Makes Predictions Nasty Boys Dispose of Bash Brothers Eddie Mar Capital Times Sporty PREDICTION CONNOISSEUR AND GOOD BUDDY "J" the Greek has crawled out of the woodwork to make his yearly football predictions. National Champion: VIRGINIA. Super bowl: RAIDERS. AT ANY RATE, I myself question the validity of these predictions knowing that they came from the same ingenious that predicted the OAKLAND A'S to win the World Series in seven games. He said Oakland would forfeit all games played in a National League stadium, thus winning all four on their home turf. Sounds like the Greek has been hanging around JOSE CANSECO too long. IF THE SHOE FITS, KICK'EM IN THE BEHIND, and that's what the CINCINNATI REDS did to the OAKLAND A'S. The Reds outplayed the A's in every aspect of the game (except talking) on their way to a sweep of "the finest baseball team of the era until the World Series." THE RED'S NASTY BOYS, relief pitchers Randy Myers, Rob Dibble, and Norm Charlton, are proof that an invincible bullpen is a crucial ingredient to winning the World Series. Are you listening, JIM LEYLAND? SPEAKING OF NASTY, how about the fastball of Rob Dibble? It was clocked at 100 mph. That's nasty. UNBELIEVABLE STAT: The Nasty Boys combined earned run average for post season play was 0.29. For the Series: 0.00. THE PIRATES BOWED OUT OF THE PENNANT RACE graciously, but not without a battle. The Reds-Pirates series was one of the most memorable in recent baseball history. Only two of the six games were decided by more than one run; the other two were decided by margins of two and three runs. I'M STILL HANGING ON FOR DEAR LIFE to my Notre Dame- Virginia matchup for the National Championship prediction. Don't count out the WASHINGTON HUSKIES though, who stomped Stanford, the same team that knocked Notre Dame from the top of the hill, 52-16. INTERESTING STAT: The winner of the Notre Dame-Miami war in the past three years has won the National Championship. THE EAGLES ARE OFF, AND STILL OFF. I think they need a little ENSE. Or maybe the Eagles spell OFF, A-W-F, as in AWF-UL. But, Buddy Ryan still feels a playoff berth is hidden somewhere (where ever that offense may be) in that team that sports a 2-4 record. DID YOU SEE TERRY BRADSHAW come out of retirement to defeat the BRONCOS? In case you didn't, he was wearing the number SIX with the letters B-R-I-S-T-E-R on the back of his jersey. But, it was good to see the BUBBY back in uniform against the 49ers, and things back to normal, of course. The Stecler organization has declined comment on the Bradshaw appearance. IN CASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW, the PSU men's basketball team will be making a visit to the friendly confines of the CUB building here on campus to play the annual blue-white game on November 13th. There is free admission to all PSH students who attend. fy 03 SI K Lions Lose Playoff Berth Yesterday the lion soccer team traveled to Wesley College with hopes of bringing home a berth to this year's NAIA District 19 playoffs. Their opponents had other ideas. Wesley spoiled all playoff hopes by exploiting defensive mistakes and a small bench to beat PSH 4-0. However, the lions still finished the season at 5-5 and placed third in NAIA standings. "I'm pleased with that record," states Head Coach Mark Ashley, "It's a big improvement from last year." "What's important," adds Ashley, "is . that this year's team members have made a name for themselves, and that can only help the reputation and confidence of next year's team." Despite Losing Record, Lady Lion Spikers Serve-up Winning Season The Penn State Harrisburg Women's Volleyball team wrapped up its season last weekend, posting a 5-7 record overall and a 2-3 record in the Keystone Athletic Conference. Head coach David Hume had nothing but praise for the Lady Lion spikers, who felt the team had a very successful season. "This season is one of the best seasons we've had in the last ten years," said coach Hume. Senior hitter Donna Sumner was satisfied with the season on the whole, but felt the team could have produced a winning record "I'm a little disappointed, but it was the best season we've had," said Sumner. "I'm happy with it, but I think we could Don Walters Capital Times Sports PSH Athletic Director Duane Crider Etidk Milke Capital Times Spark concurs by stating, "In my four years at this campus I've never seen our soccer team play at this criliber." When asked why, Crider doesn't hesitate to reply, "Coach Ashley; he's a tremendous coach, and the players work hard for him. Every team that has come through here this year recognizes what Coach Ashley has done for this program." The lions 2-1 overtime victory over Columbia Union on Monday evening is a prime example. Coach Ashley comments, "We played together as a team and passed the ball well. Our defense was on the mark." Coach Ashley invites all prospective players to come out and practice with the team. Practices will resume indoors after the start of the spring semester. All those interested should stop by 121 CUB for more information. have done better." One suggestion made by Sumner for next season dealt with student support. She felt that the turnout for volleyball, both on the floor and in the stands, was poor compared to other schools. "I wish the school would support the woman's athletic team a little more," said Sumner. A season highlight was the team's trip to Washington D.C., where they swept a tri-match from the University of District Columbia and Columbia Union. The volleyball team, the only female varsity sport at PSI!, loses five team members, all starters, to graduation. Team members include setter Darlene Rissingar, and hitters Bobbi Hulick, Lisa Knickerbocker, Barbara Streeter, Suneetha Bollu, Kim Gastrin, and Cindy Carlson.
