P sop CES FOR ; - John Rudy Two Penn State Harrisburg students called to serve in the Persian Gulf conflict have taken advantage of a new university policy allowing them to withdraw and later return without losing their university status. The Pennsylvania State University has announced the availability of special withdrawal procedures for students called to active military duty. By applying through the Penn State Harrisburg registrar, those students can be given a "military withdrawal" designation and would be eligible for a "military readmit" upon completion of their military service. Robert Dunham, vice president and provost at University Park, estimates that 500 to 700 Penn State students are members of military reserve units. Accurately estimating the number of reservists in PSH's student body is difficult, as this information is not required when students register for admission to the university. "We realize [who the reservists are] only when they come forward to say they've gotten their phone call or their orders," said Dorothy Guy, PSH registrar. "So far this semester, two students have been called up." Guy said that to preserve the students' confidentiality, she could not release their names. Students who receive orders to report for active duty should contact Guy in STUDENT LEADERS SWAP STYLES Amy Killeen Practical? Ansi!ideal? Steadfast? Are you kidding? I hide it the best I can, but I couldn't hide it at the Student Government Association's Student Leadership Conference. Saturday, August 25 was a day 53 Penn State students, 12 staff members, 2 faculty members, 2 administrators, and 1 guest from Berks campus will not soon forget. The guest facilitator for the Conference was Bob Curry. Bob has participated in several previous programs at PSH and received enthusiastic response from psuticipants. Student Activities Coordinator Janet Widoff said, "I_ think the success came from the good representation from the students." Following a tasty breakfast, me began to assess our leadership styles. We answered a few questions about how we would deal with some situations and handed it over to Bob. After a few more brief exercises. we literally exercised with Duane Crider and enjoyed a juice break with muffins. We did eat all day, but it was an integral part of the conference. I mean, after all, you can't participate in the GENERAL NEWS order to process their withdrawal from the university. The Registrar's Office is located in Room W-101 of the Olmsted Building and can be reached by calling 948-6020. Students on military withdrawal who do not return for the next semester are considered by the university to be on special military absence as long as they remain on active duty and will be eligible for military readmit upon their return to the university. The registrar will process the withdrawal and, if necessary, initiate actions with the bursar and with ['busing to complete the withdrawal process without further action by the student. Additional contacts may be necessary for affected students receiving financial aid. Special assistance for these students is available in the Student Assistance Center located in Room W-117 of the Olmsted Building. Students have requested information about the university's handling of withdrawals for military reasons since the semester began. "During registration we had a lot of people asking about the procedure," said Donald Holtzman, associate director of student affairs. "I know there are others out there who think they're potential candidates." The university's concern is not just for the student who is called up, but for others as well. "The handling of special circumstances, such as the impact of a student's spouse being called out, are also under consideration," Holtzman said. "Basically, what we're trying to Lunch n' Learn session without eating. Over a great lunch, we were seated at different tables with people that may not have been very familiar. We were asked to come to a consensus on different leadenhip than usual. Next came our moment of truth--what kind of person am I? Am I supporting giving, controlling-taking, conserving holding, or adapting-dealing? In other words, am I the nice guy, the pushy one, the organized one, or the parties? Once I saw the list of characteristics, I saw myself on paper. Bob didn't even need to read my name, I knew. It was scary to know how much a few answers could tell about a person. After we all went through the embarrassment of our flattering and less than flattering qualities, it was time to use what we had learned. Next came snack time. Okay, so maybe we did eat a lot, but we worked it off that afternoon. The afternoon session was definitely the most fun, and the most tiring. We counted off by 6's and were put on volleyball teams. The only thing was, we were told that we were a particular See Leadership on 9 do is figure out what's best for the student." Holtzman also said that students who are concerned with the situation in the Middle East or are experiencing stress over being called up should be aware that counseling is available through the Student Assistance Center. Students who are called up should follow these military withdrawal procedures as soon as possible after notification: - Contact the campus registrar. Be prepared to present a copy of military orders. An official withdrawal form will be completed with the assistance of the registrar. The reason cited will be "military." The form is to be signed by the student and the campus registrar. If timing does not permit an initial presentation of military orders, the student may initiate the withdrawal by providing a formal request in writing. A copy of the military orders must be provided (via fax or mail) in order for the student to be completely withdrawn and reimbursements made by the bursar. - Contact the Student Aid Office, if you have student aid. PSH's Registrar's Office will initiate contact with the Student Aid Office. Students who are receiving aid will need individual attention. The Student Aid Office will review eligibility for aid refunds already received by the student. Students with a military withdrawal will not be charged tuition for the semester of withdrawal. They will be charged a housing assessment for room and the base portion of board expenses of 7 percent per week until the week of withdrawal to cover expenses already incurred. Unused meal plan points will be refunded. No refunds can be made until the university has received a copy of military orders calling the student to active duty. - Address questions while on military absence regarding university status or reentry to PSH. All PSH students on military absence may contact Dorothy Guy, registrar, at 948-6020; Edwin Escalet, director of undergraduate admissions, at 948-6250; or Donald Holtzman, associate director of student affairs, at 948-6025. At the time the student is discharged from military service or is placed on inactive duty, the student is eligible for "military readmission" to the university, assuring the student direct access to the same major and location as was assigned at the time of withdrawal.
