Fellowships Research Foundation The National Research Council is awarding postdoctoral fellowships to eligible minority scholars. Native American Indians, Alaskan Natives (Eskimo or Aleut), Black Americans, Mexican Americans/Chicanos, Native Pacific Islanders (Micronesian or Polynesian), and Puerto Ricans have an opportunity to gain education and research experience by winning one of the 25 Fellowships being offered by the Ford Foundation. Fellows will be selected from among scientists, engineers and scholars in the humanities who show greatest promise of future achievement in academic research and scholarship in higher education. Minority 'cholars who are preparing for or already engaged in college or university teaching, and who hold the Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree may apply for the one-year fellowship. Awards will be made in the behavioral and social sciences, humanities, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, and biological sciences. Only those involved in these areas of study are eligible to apply. Scholarships Finnegan Foundation Applications are available for the James A. Finnegan Foundation scholarship award, according to the Foundation's Board of Directors. Winners of the contest are assigned positions in executive or legislative offices of state government, and attend seminars with leading public officials and media figures. Students are interns for a ten week period beginning about May 15 and concluding about August 15. The winner of the James A. Finnegan award will receive a $l5OO cash award. There are also eight other $l,OOO awards in honor of other Pennsylvanians. Undergraduates attending accredited Pennsylvania colleges or universities or Pennsylvania residents attending accredited colleges or universities elsewhere are eligible to apply. All applicants must have completed at least one semester. The emphases are placed on a student's background, civic endeavors and career interests, and on a written essay. Winners arc announced in late March. National Roofing The Equal Opportunity Publications Scholarship Program will be offering two $5OO non-renewable scholarships to oustanding women, minority or handicapped students who are pursuing a career in Engineering. Application deadline is Feb. 15, 1990. The National Roofing Foundation is accepting applications for three $4,000 scholarships to be awarded for the 1990- 91 academic year. Contests Poetry contest Poets may enter the American Poetry Association's nationwide contest now. Over $ll,OOO in prizes will be awarded to 152 winners. Entry is free and everyone is welcome to enter. Other prizes include cash awards and publication. "Students walked away with 24 prizes in our last contest," said Robert Nelson, publisher for the Association. "I urge every student who writes poetry to enter now--before studies and exams take up - your time. Young people with talent should get encouragement while they are still young." Poets may enter the contest by sending up to six poems, each no more than 20 lines, name and address on each page, to American Poetry Association, Dept. CT-70, 250-A Potrero Street, P.O. Each poem is also considered for publication in the American Poetry Anthology, a leading collection of contemporary verse.
