The SSHE requested $1 million in the form of a line item appropriation for the 1987- 88 fiscal year from the state legislature and will base the academy in Harrisburg. "They are going to be moving forward with the academy. The $1 million line item is not a contingency for operating the academy," said Shewell. "We have now started asking for nominations for an advisory board to the academy." The SSHE is seeking nominations for the academy advisory board to fully define and develop the new academy. The advisory board would establish programatic direction, identify priorities and general proposals for academy activities. "The Pennsylvania Academy for the Profession of Teaching will respond positively and aggressively to the call for the improvement of teaching and strengthening of curriculum at all levels of education," said McCormick, in reference to the current national studies undertaken by the Holmes group, the Carnegie Foundation, the National Governor's Association, and others. Through this academy, the state system will assess, improve, and prepare to implement all of the best recommendations of those blue ribbon study groups." The new academy wil be designed for certified schoolteachers and not for undergraduates seeking certification. Some of the programs the academy will undertake will be the development of new instructional strategies for drop-out prone students, new curricula for teacher preparaation, designing of a model Master of Arts in Teaching degree program and numerous other proposals.
