Collegian Behrend's Roundball Squad Faces Tough Disappointment by Dave Lojewski Sports Writer The Cub Basketball Team dropped two games last week to Geneva and Waynesburg by the scores of 81-71 and 87-63 respectively. Although the scores may not depict the whole story the Cubs were "in" both ball games. In the Geneva contest, Behrend was playing a highly talented school that had eliminated five previous opponents this season. The Cubs however were going into the game with an 0-2 ledger, with losses to Westminster, 81-66 in their opener, and a 101-64 thumping from Edinboro State College. The Geneva game gave their local fans quite a thrill. Since Geneva was undefeated they were a highly picked Above is some of the action that took place last Thursday evening when Behrend met Geneva on home court. Behrend lost the game to Geneva by a score of 81-71. The Behrend players seeing action are Fred Bartnicki (44), Jeff Gillette and Paul Ruland ( 45) . Girls Exhibit Atheletic Ability Girls at Behrend College were very active in their own sports program last term. Girls' in tramural basketball was one of the many girls' sports offered and took place the last five weeks of fall term. Six teams competed during the intramural season, with the team captained by Debbie Hadlock fmishing the SRC Dance On Weekend rt-' 4-4 : 4 (- 7 zEif 7" 4-) ks Christmas *t Celebration Xi& 7 p.m. Sunday ki Lawrence Rec Room with ,76: Father y ;: Guy Patrick , v ) - 4'41- N3VtgUFK.,;. In the first few minutes of the contest the Cubs played an aggressive game with a tight zone coverage that stopped Geneva cold and jumped to a quick 10-4 lead. Jim Davis and Larry McAleer paced the way with two buckets apiece. The Golden Tornadoes were forced to call a time out and tried to settle • things down. This must have relaxed them for a bit because they surged right back and knotted the game at 12-12. Jim Washington and Little (5'4") Spencer Johnson were both the cause that gave Geneva new life. Behrend however wasn't about to be put under, at least not yet anyway. They kept their torrid pace with supreme ball handling and excellent shooting to build up round robin undefeated. Mem bers of the 5-0 team included Ginger Brown, Annette Fox, Pam Grimm, Jill Heenan, Karen Smogorzewski, and Jane Truskey. The second place team, captained by Freda Hall, con cluded the season with only one loss, which was to Hadlock's powerhouse team. Ms. Hall's team mates were Mary Allen, Gail Bailey, Donna Dumbar, Darlene Howell, Becky Kirk and a 42-38 lead at intermission During halftime the Tornadoes finally put their heads together and came up with a idea that proved to be the deciding factor in the game. They must have known if they could feed their big men, 6'9" Clyde Soule and 6'7" Kevin Creasman underneath the ball game would go in their favor, and that it did. They slowed down the game some after Behrend upped its lead to 52-46 and started hitting their giants underneath. Soule hooked, tipped and layed in three quick buckets and Geneva was on their way. The Cubs, who were running all over the court trying desperately to gain control of the ball seemed to have been iunning out of gas. The Tornadoes started to pull away and ended up 81-71 with Geneva remaining un defeated and the Cubs dropped their third straight. High scorers for the Cubs were McAleer and Davis with 14 and 12 points respectively. Larry Szoszorek also added 12 points and was a key factor in the Cub rebound department. The Waynesburg game was almost identical. The Cubs started like a ball of fire but were cooled off in the latter stages of the game. They started their hot shooting ways and built up an early 14-6 lead but Waynesburg settled_down and rebounded to a 19-17 edge with almost half of the first half left. The Cubs however stayed close and were still within striking distance as they trailed 41-36 at the half. The Yellow Jackets came out in the second half and blew the Cubs right off the floor. High scorers were McAleer with 14 and Szoszorek with 13. Jim Davis added 11 for the Cubs. S. Platt. Team effort was not the only significant result of girls' intramural basketball. Captain Debbie Hadlock was high shooter for the first place team with Karen Smogorzewski following close behind. Skillful shooting for the second place team was demonstarted by captain Freda Hall. Girls' intra-basketball certainly displayed the talent and prominence of girls' sports at Behrend. THE ERIE BOOK STORE 717 FRENCH STREET 452-3354 MA CE Electronics Sells More. . .
