October 26,1972 Behrend Cubs Open Practice Basketball Team Begins Seasonal Practice Coach Sweeting hopes to build a productive season with seven returning veterans. The team has a stiff schedule, but team enthusiasm and student support, Behrend will have an exciting basketball season coming up. Regulation Basketball practice sessions have initiated the official start of Dehrend’s 1972-73 basketball season. After a full season of building a basketball foundation here at Behrend. head coach Roger Sweeting spent long hours scouting local talent as well as boys throughout Pennsylvania, in an effort to bring top-rate competitors and competition to I lehrend Campus. Behrend. now a four year athletic college, will trade baskets this season with some tough and established colleges. Behrend will have its hands full this season as well as their op ponents. Coach Sweeting hopes to build a productive season through the efforts of seven returning veterans. including Glenn Girls’ Volleyball Girl's extra-mural volleyball activities began last evening when Ilehrend played Mer cyhurst College. Cleric Nelson Physical education instructor. .Janet Wilson, is sponsor of the volleyball team and she is hoping for a winning season. Intramural volleyball is under full swing at llehrend. The girls are showing quite an interest, having twelve teams par ticipating in the tournament. Two teams are out in front with a tie for first place. Muffins Gang with Mary Rita Roach as captain along with Doris Glaz’s team show the same record of two wins and no loses. On To listening Approximately seventy residence hall students are participating in the Impact Listening program being con ducted by Resident Assistants under the supervision of Mr. Mead. The students involved meet for ninety minute sessions, in groups of six to ten during the six week program. The Resident Assistant group leaders, who were exposed to the Impact Listening program as part of their pre-term training program, have reported very favorable The program is directed at improving skills that are noticeably lacking among many college students. Following the instructions on a series of tapes, the group members are en couraged to listen to the ex periences. reactions, and feelings of each other in regards to the topics of: Me and the University, Sidewalk Communication, Friendship. Depression, Belonging, and one topic of concern chosen by the group. The group members have .agreed to react as openly and honestly as possible, while respecting the feelings, opinions, and confidence of the other group members. The discussion topics are designed to allow the sharing of the small but important feeling of everyday college life. Through this medium and guidelines set down by the tapes, the group members will be able to develop the skills of Listening ana Expression. True Listening, according to the goals of the program, is listening to another without judgement, with a positive, warm interest, a con cern to really understand another in both similarity and difference. In addition to improving in terpersonal skills, the program is also aimed at helping students deal with common, yet disturbing feelings such as: “It seems like everyone talks but no one really listens,” “It is hard for me to express exactly how I feel,” “Sometimes I feel like a number, insignificant, lost in Ihe shuffle,” “I have a hard time making friends in new settings,” and “Many times I feel like I’m alone in my feelings about myself, the University, and things in general.” The program will be carefully evaluated during winter term. If the final results are as positive as the preliminary reports indicate they may be, the program may be repeated spring term and possibly may be incorporated into freshman orientation next year. Student Voices View Robert Britton, political science major at Behrend. recently appeared on Pace, a local television documentary. The topic under discussion was black politics in Erie. Britton was representing Erie’s black college students with respect to how they feel about the present government. Other members of the discussion were show host.
