The Penn State Behrend
women’s volleyball team de
feated the Grove City Wolver
ines in an intense match on
Sept. 30.
The first match started off at
a dawdling pace, although
highly competitive. Both teams
rallied to gain the lead. The
Lady Ladies went on to edge
out the first set by the score of
28-26.

Penn State Behrend’s golf
team is going to be among the
most competitive teams in the
AMCC to win the conference’s
Championship. The team will
be heading to Chestnut Ridge
Golf Course, in Blairsville, PA,
to contend for the title, on Oct.
4 and 5.
This year, the golf team has
won two of seven invitationals
and placed in the top three five
times.
After coming off a big first
place finish at the La Roche In
vitational on Tuesday, the team
has momentum going into the
AMCC Championships. The
Lions defeated its toughest con
ference competition against Pitt
Bradford and rival Penn State
Altoona.
Coach Bowen is optimistic
about his team’s chances to
come out on top, again.
The ladies dominated the
second set as they gained a lead
on Grove City.
The Lady Lions completely
exploded to begin the third set.
At one point in the match,
Behrend had a 14-6 lead over
the Wolverines, which was their
largest lead of the game.
As the match progressed,
Penn State lost their
composure and allowed the
Wolverines to rally to a 17-17
tie.

“We have a lot of confidence,
right now,” Bowen says. “The
guys have really started to pull
it all together. I am looking for
ward to weekend, and I
think we have a real shot of
winning.”
The boys will be led by senior
captain Joe Nelson, who is
looking to repeat his medalist
performance this weekend.
Nelson has finished in the top
five in six out of seven invites,
and he is shooting in the mid
70s every time he steps on the
course.
“Joe is a great leader, and he
does everything a captain
should,” Bowen said. “He keeps
the team loose at the meets, but
still pushes them to focus and
play at their top level. He is
everything you want in a team
leader.”

to regroup, only to come back
in the next volley to lose the
lead. After a highly competitive
and intense third match, the
Blue and White pulled out a vic
tory over the Wolverines by the
score of 25-21.
Behrend’s victory over the
Wolverines eased the sting of a
loss to Frostburg State earlier
in the week.
The next time the Lady Lions
compete will be on Oct. 3 at
Pitt-Greensburg for a double
header.

Fellow seniors Marc Neis
wonger, Pat Petraglia and An
thony Mortillaro will also be
counted on to have strong per
formances at Chestnut Ridge.
Petraglia has played well in the
last three invites and looks to
step up again this weekend.
Even though Mortillaro is fight
ing the flu this week, he still
managed to play in the rain and
doesn’t have any plans of let
ting up for the title.
Sophomores Kyle Meehl and
Kevin Koerbel each have had
their struggles this year, but are
gradually improving and will be
need to play well for the team
to win the title.
The golf team appears to be
ready for its stiffest competi
tion, but the team needs to
come together to win the
AMCC Championship.
“This is definitely one of the
best teams we’ve put together
since I’ve been around,” Bowen
said.
Senior Sheila Ogden's spike
accentuated Behrend's victory.
