The New Orleans Saints and the Chicago Bears played for the NFC title. The Bears started off the first half of the game with three field goals by kicker Robbie Gould, and a touchdown by run ning back Thomas Jones to give them a 16-0 lead over the Saints. Before the end of the first half, Saints quarterback Drew Brees threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Marques Colston, putting New Orleans on the board. In the second half, the Saints looked like they had a chance when rookie Reggie Bush caught an 88-yard pass from Brees for a touchdown, giving the Bears only a 16-14 lead. The rest of the game was dominated by the Bears, who added three more touchdowns and a safety to their score, giving them a 39-14 victory and the title of NFC Champs. This game was won by the Bears' defense, who forced four turnovers and more or less shut down the number one offense in the NFL, the New Orleans Saints. Other factors included quarter back Rex Grossman's zero turnovers and the two touchdowns and 123 yards run- ning by Jones. The Indianapolis Colts and the New England Patriots fought hard for the AFC title. The Patriots scored the first points of the game when running back Laurence Maroney fumbled a hand-off from quar terback Tom Brady, which was recovered by offensive lineman Logan Mankins in the end zone for a touchdown. The Colts answered this touchdown with a field goal, making the score 7-3 in Lady Lions know there's no "I" in team By Kara Struski sports editor The Behrend Lady Lions are on a roll. The Lions have won 15 of their last 17 games and have no plans of stopping now On Jan. 10, the Lions played their most challenging game of the year, out -shooting conference rivals Medaille 50-49. In another recent home court victory, the Lady Lions got revenge against Frostburg State, winning 74- 54. The first time the Lions faced Frostburg, they were dealt their first and only conference loss of the season thus far. Head Coach Roz Fornari says the team is driven and focused. "They get it. They get that it takes everybody and not just one star or one person," says Fornari. "It's not something that has to be taught to them, they see that." Although the team is rather young, with only three juniors and one senior, Fornari says the leadership on the team is stronger than ever. "The freshmen have come in and they aren't follow ing us; they are going with us. The potential of the team is high because of them," says Fornari. Behrend men look to gain top spot in AMCC The Penn State Behrend Men's Basketball team began the New Year by winning six of their last seven games, all of which were against conference opponents. The Lions, who currently sit in second place behind Lake Erie in AMCC play with an overall record of 12-5, earned a quar tet of decisive victories to begin the year. Behrend took a pair of crucial road games against Penn State Altoona and Pitt-Bradford, returned to Erie, and defeated Medaille and La Roche. Throughout the four game stretch, the Lions defense, which ranks fifth in the nation, only allowed an average of 58 points per game. Behrend's momentum, however, could only last so long, as the Lions fell to conference rival Lake Erie 63-51 this past Thursday at the Junker Center. Entering the heated match-up, both Behrend and Lake Erie held perfect 8-0 conference records, implying that the winner would take sole possession of the AMCC. Fueled to stay unbeaten, Behrend's defense went to work, allowing Lake Erie a season low 18 first half points. The Storm, however, controlled the second half, outscoring Behrend by 18 points and taking advantage of the Lions 12 second half turnovers. Junior Kevin Buczynski led all scorers with 26 points, while freshman guard Justin Kovac added 11 points. Junior forward David Gahan came down with 11 boards.
