Playoff Race The cool breeze that blows these days is a sign to baseball fans everywhere that the heat of playoff races is at its maximum. With just over a week left in the regular season, teams are fighting for the right to play into October. Currently, only two teams have clinched their division and a playoff spot. The Mets became the first team into the playoffs by winning the National League East on Sunday. The Yankees won their ninth straight American League East title on Tuesday. SERVICES By Jordan Gilmore copy editor Behrend Soccer Tourney Thomas Moore was the spoiler for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams during the Herb Lauffer tournament, as both squads split a pair of games. The men’s team opened up the tournament against Thomas Moore, who captured an early lead with a goal from John Wallace. The Lions fought back to tie the game up 1-1 when Adam Cline found the net on a Dave Balleno corner kick. The game remained netted up until the final minutes of the second half when the Saint’s scored the decisive goal. Their second game came on Sunday against Westminster, who scored in the opening minutes to go up 1-0. The game remained scoreless until Ahmad Salim evened it up in the sixtieth minute on a penalty kick. The game remained knotted up through two over times, leaving Behrend with a record of 0-1-1. Coach Dan Parritano was rather pleased with his teams performance despite the fact that they failed to pick up a win. “We played good enough to win both games, and I thought we did particularly well on Sunday. We just need to work on putting the ball in the net.” The women opened the weekend against Westminster in a two overtime thriller. The game remained score less through regulation and the first overtime period. With just one minute and fifteen seconds remaining in the final overtime period Nikki Frisbee scored the game-winning goal. The other hero of the match was freshman goalie Kayla Frost who recorded five saves and the shutout. “It was a good win; they were a decent team and were regionally ranked,” stated Coach Patrick O’Driscoll. “To win a game in overtime like that is huge for a team.” •fL , Hi The Lady Lions were hoping to carry their momen tum over to Sunday’s game, but Thomas Moore had a different agenda. Nearly six minutes into the match Kari Poling put the Saint’s ahead, and they would never look back from there. Poling struck again before the half to pull ahead 2-0. Behrend’s lone goal came off a volley by Beth Manganaro. Thomas More would add another goal to win the game 3-1. “I thought that Thomas Moore was weaker than Westminster. I was a little disappointed with the out come, but we played a man down, so it was a hard loss,” O’Driscoll explained. Last season the ladies went undefeated in the AMCC and hope to recapture that glory this season. “You can’t look past any opponents, but we are looking to win the conference again,” said O'Driscoll. "Some of the team’s have really improved, so obviously it will be hard to win them all again, but if you get to host the conference tournament that is a really big advantage because you don’t have to travel then." To do this O’Driscoll feels that his team needs to work on their offensive attack. ‘‘We are really strong defensively, but we haven't clicked on the offensive side of the ball. So, we need to work on that during our conference games. Once we get that down I think we'll be okay.” Westminster was awarded the men's championship after beating La Roche and finishing up 1-0-1.
