Alumni night offers networking tips
By Tiffany Mak
staff writer
The Career Development Center, in
cooperation with the Behrend Alumni
Society, will be holding an Alumni
Networking Event for all students.
Participating students will learn about
the experiences the alumni have had
and put what they have learned into
practice.
As part of their mission, the Behrend
Alumni Society is focused on helping
current students develop their profes
sional skills as well as creating bonds of
friendship that can last a lifetime,
according to Rebecca Grimaldi, assis
tant director of development of alumni
relations.
The goal of the networking event will
be to inform students of the basics of
networking, clear up any misconcep
tions or questions they have about net-

working and show students the skills
necessary to network successfully.
Students who find themselves uneasy
in front of their future employers in an
unfamiliar situation are welcome to
take part in the event "Networking Part
1 Ties to Help You Succeed" on
Tuesday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in
Reed 3.
Within the hour, students are given a
chance to learn the skills they need to
network with others. A positive net
working relationship requires time and
commitment to build what job seekers
need to establish trust and show interest
in their audience's concerns. A demon
stration of construction relationships by
showing genuine interest and making
connections beyond an introduction
will be shown to students.
" The Behrend Alumni Society and its
executive board are very interested in
ways that they can connect with current
students and share their experiences and

advice," said Andrew Waiters, director
of CDC.
Along with the techniques students
acquired in Part 1 of the program, they
are encouraged to attend the second ses
sion, "Networking Part 2 Learn from
Experience" on April 4 from 5:30 p.m.
to 7:00 p.m. in the Logan House.
This session will give students the
opportunity to practice their networking
skills with the Behrend alumni. The
alumni will share their observations and
suggestions for ways students can con
tinue to improve their skills.
"The students benefit from the prac
tice and experience of talking to people
on a professional level in a conversa
tional setting rather than the strict con
fines of an interview," said Grimaldi.
A ratio of two to three students per
alumni is expected at the Logan House
event in order to make it very realistic
for students to go to a social networking
event and practice their skills.

"Each time I've attended I've learned
things that have helped me improve my
networking skills," said Samantha
Cibula, COMBA 08, who has partici
pated in two of the Alumni networking
events at Penn State Erie.
Although students are not required to
attend both, they are recommended to
use the skill they learned in the first ses
sion to perfect their interaction skills
through real conversations with the
alumni in the second session.
"It also gives students a great oppor
tunity to engage in conversation with
PSU alumni and learn how they have
found their path to success," said
Cibula.
Light refreshments will also be
served at the second session. It is
required that students RSVP to the CDC
by March 29. Students may contact the
CDC by calling 898-6164 or stopping
by the office located downstairs in the
Reed Union Building.

Mattachine Society" by Dr.
Douglas Charles, lecturer in

Room from noon until 1:30 p.m.
The final talk of the series will
