An an ticipated rematch with Grove City at 10 a.m., a strong Washington & Jefferson team at 1 p.m., and Gannon at 9 p.m., ( 12 hours after the Lion's day began), rounded out Saturday's action. The last time Grove City and Behrend battled, Behrend hung with Grove City through the first three quarters, suffer ing a fourth quarter breakdown that lead to a 16-10 defeat. The rematch showed the same results, including the same 4th quarter letdown by the Lions, as Grove City defeated Behrend 15-9. "I felt very prepared going into the Grove City game, - said head coach Josh Heynes about the rematch. He had high expectations of a Behrend victory against Grove City and commented that the scores of the past two games have not really reflected their closeness. "Fourth quarter mental shutdowns have happened both times we have played them. GCC should he a team we heat on a consistent basis, - added Heynes. Ward currently has 23 goals for the season and is two goals behind the pace of former player Andy Hanhauser and his record for most goals scored in a season. Fellow freshman J.R. Delorenzo had two goals in the Behrend loss and senior Ben Atkins continued his impressive performance by racking up five steals. Following the Grove City loss, Behrend had to face a strong Washing ton & Jefferson team. "They have the recruiting class of the year. They are beating Di vision II schools. They are just way too fast, strong, and experienced." Heynes said. Washington & Jefferson wasted no time unloading, useing their strength and speed to unleash 14 goals on Behrend and swim-away with a 14-3 victory. Ward scored only one goal for Behrend but had four steals for the game and goalie Nick McGrady managed 11 saves during the offensive onslaught. After the two tough losses, the Lions still had to travel to Gannon, where an other strong opponent awaited. In the first quarter of play, the Lions were dealt a crushing blow. "With McGrady possibly out for the rest of the year, it will definitely put a dent in what we are trying to do," said Heynes. The Lions could never fully recovered from the loss of their starting goalie and eventually ran out of steam, losing to Gannon 16-5. The Lions dropped all three-tournament games and are now on a six game losing skid. However, the Lions are not counting themselves out of contention. "We just need to keep working hard in practice and play the same in games. Little mistakes are killing us," said se nior Ben Atkins. Hard practices and eliminating mis takes seem to be a key area of focus for the men so far. Heynes agrees that the little things are killing his team and looks to eliminate mental errors. With a break in the schedule until Oc tober, the Lions will crank up the yard age and work on eliminating the little mistakes in order to remain competitive. Next up for the Lions will be October I' l at Washington & Jefferson facing Gannon. The Lions, who received an excellent performance from freshman Daniel Russo, finished a modest fifth. Russo, the team's top performer, shot a career best 80, and was the one bright spot for the Lion's. Jeff Black, a star sophomore golfer for the Lions, was displeased with his own performance "I did not shoot too well at Bradford. It was a rough day and the course was not in the best of shape because they are getting ready for winter," said Black. "It was just one of those days where nothing really goes your way, and you can't get in a groove of any kind. I shot an 81, which is not one of my better per formances." The Lions have struggled to get con sistent performances, they believe that is holding them back from becoming an excellent group of golfers. "We have played OK, but not as good as we can," said head coach Mark Murphy. "If we can get all our guys to play well at the same time we could be good."
