The Behrend Beacon Swim teams breaking records faster than they set them by Kate Levdansky Petrikis assistant sports editor The Behrend men’s and women’s swim teams raced against Mt. Union and Grove City on Jan. 18. The men tied Mt. Union at 54 points each, but fell to Grove City 63-45. The women also competed in a tough race, but lost to Mt. Union 110-75. However, most swimmers came away with personal best times in their respective events. Justin Lucas set a new team record in the 1000 free with a time of 10:32.68. On the women’s side, Christine Williams set a new team record Women’s Basketball C.R. Teammate Samantha Cibula also set a new team record, the 1000 free, with a time of 12:15.86. Even though the Lady Lions lost, they swam outstanding times. “It is great to see the improvements still coming even though we are in the toughest training part of the season,” said coach Josh Heynes. “It says a lot about what we are do ing both in and out of the pool.” Behrend also competed against Edinboro ■*>«* d< ' and lost on both the men’s THE BEACON SCOREBOARD Men’s Basketball School C.R. The men lost 107-84, and the women lost 109-69. It was another tough meet for Behrend, es pecially since it was the second meet in two days against local Division II rival Edinboro. Again, many personal best times were set for the team. “We swam some people in different events to see what they could do for us,” said Heynes. Williams set another new team record, this time in the 200 free with a time of 2:07.97. Teammate Tara Braden set the record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:15.16. “The team swam exceptionally well. I can tell we will be ready for conference if every thing stays the course,” said Heynes. Saturday’s meet against Frostburg will be difficult. Frostburg is Behrend’s AMCC ri val, and swims very fast with a large team. “I am just interested to see what they have to bring to the table. It will help me decide what to put my team in at conference,” said Heynes. “To beat them, it would take a miracle, given they were last year’s AMCC classic champs. However, we are going to treat this just like any other weekend: swim tough, swim fast, and see what happens. All our swimmers will have to be key this week end. Points are points, even if it is one or nine, it makes a difference.” Upcoming competition includes Washing ton & Jefferson, Nazareth, and Penn State Altoona. W & J has a very big team and a winning tradition. Nazareth will be a new competitor for Behrend and should prove to be interesting. Behrend’s last home meet be fore the conference, against Penn State Altoona, should be the final walk through to give the coaches an idea on where the team stands before it starts resting the swimmers. “Our eyes are always and forever will be set on getting people qualified to the next level,” said Heynes. “Swimming is more of an individual sport than a team, when it comes to that. Once one or two people make it, then it seems like the next year more and more join in. We have a very good shot at getting some people to ECAC and Division 111 NCAAs. “In two weeks all the training will be done, and it will be up to them on what happens the two weeks prior to conference. Will they rest? Will they not get sick? Will they get their work done? All the small things will affect them THE BEHREND SPORTS SCENE Winter Olympic Results Ist Place - Lambda Siama Prizes - Peak 'n Peek Play and Stay, $5O Bruno's Bucks, $lO Max and Erma’s, $lO Great Escape, $2O Outback Steakhouse, five $lO Dick's Certificates 2nd Place - Team Finance Prizes - $5O Dick’s, $lO Great Escape, THE NATIONAL SPORTS ARENA Division I College Basketball 129 121 112 109 92 1 Connecticut 20-0 1,000 2 Tennessee 16-1 947 3 Stanford 18-1 902 4 Oklahoma 15-2 891 5 Vanderbilt 18-3 839 6 Duke 15-3 789 7 South Carolina 17-2 714 8 Wisconsin 16-2 678 9 Louisiana Techl2-3 670 10 lowa St 14-4 591 11 Purdue 14-3 567 12 Texas 13-3 532 13 Texas Tech 11-5 481 14 Baylor 14-3 460 15 Kansas St 17-2 439 16 Georgia 13-4 398 17 Virginia Tech 14-3 330 18 Flordia 13-5 319 19 Colorado 13-6 248 20 North Carolina 14-4 244 21 Colorado St 15-3 238 22 Auburn 13-4 142 23 Boston College 14-3 79 24 LSU 10-6 72 25 Minnesota 14-3 64 OTHERS RECEIVING VOTES TCU 63, Michigan 43, St. Josephs 42, Tulane 35, Old Dominion 19, George Washington 18, UNLV 18.
