As part of the Black History Month celebrations, Behrend stu
dents will perform a hip hop musical on February 16, at 7:00
p.m. in the Studio Theatre. The musical, titled HipHopera, is
about college life. Tickets are $3 with ID and $5 without.

UP TILL THE CRACK OF DAWN
The Midnight Bingo Committee will be hosting a free Mid
night Bingo on Friday, February 16, from 10:30 p.m. to 1:30
a.m. These bingo nights are not your grandparents’ bingo, though:
there will be hundreds of dollars in prizes, free breakfast-themed
food, music, and more. Each bingo has a theme, with this week’s
being “Sleepover.” Students wearing pajamas will receive a door

Reality Check will have an organizational meeting for a new
program it is sponsoring, called The Neighborhood Art House.
The meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 21, at 4:00
p.m. in Reed 112. The program is for anyone interested in volun
teering with children. The Art House, located at 201 East 10th
Street in Erie, is a place for kids to go after school to do crafts,
get help with homework, and just have a good time.

NOVELIST TO PERFORM
FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH
African-American novelist, performance poet, and traditional
griot Arthur Flowers will perform at
Penn State Behrend on Wednesday,
February 21, at 6:30 p.m. in the Reed
Commons. Flowers’ appearance is
part of the Diversity Through Poetry
Series and coincides with the African
American Extravaganza celebrating
Black History Month.
Flowers is know as a contempo
rary griot, a tradition derived from the
ancient Africans who memorized his
tory and orally passed it on. Flowers
is also a performance poet, combin
ing literary reading, topical commen
tary, and a variety ol African and blues instruments in his presen
tations.
Flowers has written several novels, poems, and even a children’s
book.

V jfj EVOLUTION IN THE UNIVERSE
The Open House Nights in Astronomy will host “Evolution in
the Universe,” a lecture by Dr. Roger Knacke, professor of phys
ics and director of the School of Science. The Open House will
be held on Thursday, February 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Science 101.
Knacke will discuss the evolution of the planet’s atmosphere,
temperature, and climate as it is proposed by the Big Bang theory.
This lecture is intended for a non-technical audience, and astro
nomical observing will follow the lecture, weather permitting.

The Commuter Council, in conjunction with the Lion Entertainment
Board, is sponsoring the Ultimate Dance-A-Thon Survivor from 8:00 p.m.
on Friday, February 23, to 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, Based on
the TV show “Survivor,” the dance-a-thon will divide participants into
tribal teams and the teams will compete to prevent their members from
being “voted off the island.”
This year’s dance-a-thon will benefit children affected by the HIV virus.
Pledge forms are available at the RUB Desk and are to be turned in to the
RUB Desk by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23. Any questions should be
directed to the Commuter Council Office at x 6452.
The Institute on the American Dream at Penn State Behrend will be hosting
“Working for What? Winners and Losers in the American Dream.” This
conference will run from Tuesday, February 27, to Thursday, March 1.
The three-day event will include two lectures, six 90-minute workshops
moderated by community leaders, and a dramatic presentation of Working,
a play by Studs Terkel.
Lecturers for the conference will be Dr. Cornel West and Dr. Annette
Levitt, professor of English at Drexel University.
The 90-minute workshops include:
Business and the American Dream
Local Unions and the American Dream
I Dream of America
Social Intervention and the Future of Erie
Building a Healthy Community
No Challenge is Too Great: Re-thinking Challenged Students

Wednesday, February 28, is the deadline for the Faculty Award Nomi
nations. Nomination forms are available in all school offices, the Library,
the Computer Center, the Provost’s Office, and at the R.U.B. Desk. Nomi
nations may also be submitted on the web via the link from the Penn State
Erie home page.
Awards will be given out in the following categories: Council of Fel
lows Excellence in Teaching Award, Guy W. Wilson Excellence in Aca
demic Advising Award, Council of Fellows Faculty Excellence in Out
reach and Service Award, and the Benjamin A. Lane Outstanding Service
Award. All of these awards will be presented at the Honors and Awards

The 2001-2002 Penn State Behrend Academic and Leadership
Scholarship Applications are now available. They can be picked up in the
Financial Aid Office in the second floor of the Glenhill Farmhouse, or by
visiting the Financial Aid section of the Behrend Website. Applications
are due March 2, 2001.
