Flowers’ appearance is part of the Diversity Through Poetry Series and coincides with the African American Extravaganza celebrating Black History Month. Flowers is know as a contempo rary griot, a tradition derived from the ancient Africans who memorized his tory and orally passed it on. Flowers is also a performance poet, combin ing literary reading, topical commen tary, and a variety ol African and blues instruments in his presen tations. The Open House will be held on Thursday, February 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Science 101. Knacke will discuss the evolution of the planet’s atmosphere, temperature, and climate as it is proposed by the Big Bang theory. This lecture is intended for a non-technical audience, and astro nomical observing will follow the lecture, weather permitting. For more information call the School of Science at x 6105. 9:00 p.m Lion Entertainment Board Movie, Remember the Titans, Reed 117 mark Your Calendars The Commuter Council, in conjunction with the Lion Entertainment Board, is sponsoring the Ultimate Dance-A-Thon Survivor from 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 23, to 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, Based on the TV show “Survivor,” the dance-a-thon will divide participants into tribal teams and the teams will compete to prevent their members from being “voted off the island.” This year’s dance-a-thon will benefit children affected by the HIV virus. Pledge forms are available at the RUB Desk and are to be turned in to the RUB Desk by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23. Any questions should be directed to the Commuter Council Office at x 6452. The Institute on the American Dream at Penn State Behrend will be hosting “Working for What? Winners and Losers in the American Dream.” This conference will run from Tuesday, February 27, to Thursday, March 1. The three-day event will include two lectures, six 90-minute workshops moderated by community leaders, and a dramatic presentation of Working, a play by Studs Terkel. Lecturers for the conference will be Dr. Cornel West and Dr. Annette Levitt, professor of English at Drexel University.
