Ultimate Praise serenades Behrend by Jermaine Hardy features co-editor Ultimate Praise is a gospel choir that has been serenading Behrend with soulful sounds since 1997. It was in this year that ultimate praise was founded by Brandy Whiting, a Penn State Behrend graduate as of last year. The choir, now headed by Sheika Brown as president, consists of 20 members while still growing with promise. This gospel choir is dedicated to getting students to worship and praise with song. Goldman speaks from the heart by Karl Benacci features co-editor On Tuesday, September 19, at 7:00 p.m., speaker Joe Goldman captivated an audience that filled the Reed Com mons area with a lecture about the dan gers of sex under the influence. Goldman displayed the negative conse quences of alcohol by showing a video that presented college students speak ing about mistakes that they made while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, and Goldman spoke about the mistakes that he, himself, made with al cohol. Joel has spoken at colleges around the country for eight years, helping stu dents understand the dangers of mixing sex and alcohol, from a personal per spective. He is infected with the HIV virus. Although unsure of when he con tracted HIV, he believes that alcohol played a part in the impairment of his judgment, resulting in unsafe sex. Goldman's lecture moved many of the students in attendance. Traci Hamm, the Panhellenic Vice President of Recruit- ment, stated, "the issue of alcohol and sex affects us all, whether we think it does or not. Joel's most gratifying moment as a speaker circles around a young man named Jared. While Joel was speaking at the University of South Florida, he met Jared. Jared was I lIV positive and was afraid to tell his fraternity brothers. Jared was one of only 50 students in the audi ence that night. A year later, when Joel returned to the college, he was saddened to learn that Jared had passed away the previous night. When Joel spoke, over 30t )0 people showed up.
