It’s their nev scries by Chris Carter, Millennium, which airs Friday nighls at 9 PM. The show stars Lance Henriksen as Frank Black, a retired homicide detective and FBI agent. Recently returning to Seattle form Washington, D.C. with his wife, Katherine (Megan Gallagher), and his daughter, Jordon, he has hopes of putting his past work behind him. His hope is short lived, however, when he learns of a homicide that had taken place days before his arrival. This draws him back into the “consultant’' position he holds within an organization known as the Millennium Group. THE SPATS by JEFF PICKERING Take a drive by Sheila L. There are no rules to follow, no one to report to, and no Movie Reviews By Joe Ryan Collegian Staff The holidays are swiftly approaching bringing with them family togetherness, the spirit of giving, and with that, huge revenues for retail chains. Retail stores count on people to spend millions of dollars nationwide this holiday season, and since they all want as much money as possible, they are willing to bring the latest thing. Home videos have been growing steadily in popularity in recent years so do not be surprised to find all your summer favorites available for the holidays. Here's a holiday rap up of the movies of the summer. They arc rated on 0-5 stars with 5 being the best. 1. The Craft- This would just be another teen angst movie about a group of high school outcasts if it did not do such a good job with special effects and plot. The movie is about witches but takes an understanding and nonjudgmental look at them. 2. The Hock- By lar the best movie of the summer. This movie is definitely one of the greatest action movies of all time due, in large part, to spectacular performances by Sean Connery, Nicholas Cage, and Ed Harris. The movie has great special effects and something else unprecedented in many action movics-a plot! ★★★★ 3. Spy Hard- If you arc looking for another Naked Gun movie, look elsewhere. This movie goes nowhere fast and stays there. Frank has the ability to get inside the killer’s head, seeing the world the way he docs. Both a blessing and a curse to him, this “gift” is what makes him part of the Millennium Group and what enables him to find the murderer, who dies whispering, “You can’t stop it.” The show does not focus completely on Frank’s psychic abilities, but they arc the main theme through the show. There are allusions to a “greater force,” part of which was driving the killer to do what he did. Whether psychic or wholly supernatural, it does have a rather apocalyptic air to it, as hinted to by the killer’s final words. In addition, the show gives time to Frank’s struggle with trying to run a normal family. Early on, there are problems that test both time limit. You can sing as loud and as oul-of-tune as you want and not worry about bothering someone studying next door or have your roommate stare at you in confusion. Don’t have a car? Ask a friend with one to go. He or she probably needs a break as badly as you do. One, two or more can enjoy each other’s company, gossip or just sit back and revele at Mother Nature’s handiwork. Don’t worry about not knowing where to go. Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Niagara Falls are all about two and a half hours away. if you don’t like the big cities, explore some back roads and find a quaint country town. The people are very down to earth, friendly and hospitable. And are usually good about giving directions to the leery traveler. Take a drive. It’s that simple. 4. Eraser- This is your classic Arnold Schwartzenegger movie. Pure action with the classic Arnold stylings. Plenty of great one-liners and one-man-takes-on-everyone scenes. Vanessa Williams is good in her action debut. 2 1/2 stars 5. Independence Day- The greatest special effects movie of all lime. Much of the sequences were done completely by computer animation and work very well. The story is very interesting in a Stephen King’s The Stand kind of way. The plot drags a little bit, but it will definitely hit you with patriotism. Will Smith makes the movie in is best role since Bad Boys. 6. Mission Impossible- This movie is definitely a mixed bag. If you expect to go in and see a lot of great action scenes, don't bother. See The Rock instead. If you want a partially boring mystery movie, this might appeal to you. Tom Cruise has been better, but it is great to see a movie taking advantage of Ving Rhames (Marcellus Wallace from Pulp Fiction ). ★★ I would say the ones to catch are definitely The Rock, Independence Day and The Craft. You may want to catch Eraser to see Arnold in his finest action form, but you may want to pass on Mission Impossible. Spy Hard is not even worth the lime, so don't bother. Frank and Katherine, one of which is Jordon ending up in the hospital. Here is where we see that while Katherine does not completely like what her husband does, she knows it is important to him. Another problem is one Katherine does not know about. Part of the reason they left Washington was that Frank was being sent Polaroids of Katherine while she was out of the house. This disturbed him, since one of the men he put in jail did something similar to his victims. Now in Seattle, Frank receives another envelope of pictures, all taken recently. The cinematography and beginning plot of Millennium reminded me somewhat of Seven: the darkness, scenes done in black and white, and the killer that is The entire Collegian staff would like to wish everyone a Happy Halloween! The X-Files. One major difference is the nature of the program. It is much more graphic and disturbing, another characteristic that reminded me of Seven. While Millennium has a unique concept, it is still very rough. The graphic nature is a change from Fox’s normal Friday’s programs. There is also the abundant focus on the psychic aspects of the show, which do not appear to be extremely confusing right now. Other than that, the show is well done, keeping you watching right up to the end. Definitely a darker twist to the paranormal, Millennium promises to be an interesting show, to say the least.
