It seems to us that a word will not be out of place just here in re gard to football prospects. Sat urday's game, if judged from the score alone, without taking other things into consideration, was a decided victory for the 'lndians. Such judgement, however, would be decidedly unfair to our team. _First of all, the Carlisle Indians are to all intents and purposes a pro fessional football team. They do not play under a four-year rule, and there are absolutely no restrictions as where or how long a man has played. Some of the men who played in Saturday's game have been members of the team for six or seven years, others have come from strong Western teams, while several have had years of prof es sional football. IHE STATE COLLEGIAN We are offering no apology for the work done . by Captain Burns and his men, for it needs none. Our line work was just as steady and consistent as theirs, and had it not been for the forward pass and their kicking, the score would have told a different story. As for the hard games which re- main to be playea, we should feel nothing but encouragement. Our men are playing with a grit and de termination which cannot accept defeat, and unless our judgment is far wrong, the rest of the season will show a list of scores worthy of comparison with that of last year. Once more the campus cutting evil is becoming serious. A num ber of deeply cut paths have ap peared and if protective measures are not adopted at once they will become permanent ones. When the ground is soft in spring and fall promiscuous cutting• does great damage. It those who prefer short cuts would follow the common sense rule of scattering over a wider die tance no sharp path whould be worn. A few extra steps will pre serve the beauty of our campus. Will you take them ? As announced last week, ' several positions on the Collegian staff are open to members of the senior, junior, and sophomore classes. These will be filled oy competitive work on assigned topics and the choice made without partiality of any kind. A number of names have already been handed in and any others desiring to compete should drop a note in the box at Room 323 Main at once. CALENDAR. THURSDAY, OC r. 10 7:00 P. M. To the Editor of the State Collegian I wish to say a word to the State College public concerning the course of free lectures which will be de livered in the Auditorium during the present academic year. The sum of nearly $4OO has al ready been subscribed for the pur pose of defaying the expenses of this course. tidditional subscrip tions are being received daily. Of this sum $250 have been given by members of the Faculty and by others officially connected with the College. The remainder represents the contributions of other friends of the College, mainly citizens of State Coll.:ge and Bellefonte. That so considerable a sum can be raised entirely by voluntary subscriptions is evidence of the generosity and public spirit of our community. As treasurer of the fund I wish to take this opportunity to thank the sub scribers for their liberality and their interest in this enterprise. It is hoped that the fund will be suffi cient to provide one good lecture for each month of the college year.
