Johnstown Game The game with "Prexie" Ather ton's Johnstown Tri-Staters was a splendid exhibition of base ball all the way. Atherton, himself a former State athlete, told Captain Mc- Ilveen after the game that his "White and Blue" nine was a sturdy aggregation. With over 3000 en thusiastic Johnstown rooters shout ing for their favorites, "Prexie" ex plained to "Mac" that the Johns town players kept jollying him on the bench about "his college team" going up in the air as the ordinary college nine does when pitted against professionals, but "Prexie had the laugh on his Johnstown players when the fifth inning came around and the score stood' 1 to n for the Collegians. Not until the fifth in ning did Johnstown secure a hit off Mcllveen, when Martin's three sacker gave the Tri-States their first State's sons scored in the very THE STATE COLLEGIAN first inning when "Birdie" Cree, their irrepressible little short-stop, commenced things by tearing off a ringing drive past third. Kilmer neatly sacrified him to second, he reached third on Mason's grounder to Holly, and trotted home on Cap tain Mcilveen's rousing two bagger over Atherton's head in left field. Several very I lose base decisions kept State from further scorirg until the last inning. Mean while in the seventh the Joyful Johnnies enjoyed a batting rally which fairly crazed the big crowd. Atherton flew out to Haverstick, but Magie tripled, Ramer singled, Barber was safe on a wide throw by Mahaffey to Ross, Murphy tripled, and McDuggan flied to Thompson, all of which gave Johnstown 3 runs and male the score 4to 1 in their 19 29 27 12 3 R B Po A E .10 2 2 1 114 3 1 103 3 1 104 0 0 022 2 0 112 1 0 004 0 0 003 0 0 000 1 0 000 1 0 .. , . .. 5 4 24 13 3 1 0 5 5 0 3 4 0 x -19 2020t1 0 1 0- 5 But when the last inning came State's warriors were still filled with good fighting spirit, and Thompson uncorked a rattling single to left. Haverstick flied to light, and Tom my moved up to second on a grounder by Ross to Barber. Then State's Freshman right fielder, Pierce, drove out a terrific hit into the dense crowd to right field, Thompson scoring. Then came the unsatisfactory fin ish to this fine game. Somebody in the crowd kicked the bail out to Magie who threw to third, and retired Pierce at that base. But the agreement had been made "that a hit into the crowd was good for three bases," and Johnstown had previously taken advantage of this ruling several times. However, the excited fans did not know this rule and came pell mell 1 - onto the dia mond to congratulate their victorious favorites. At least a thousand peo ple were ci owded upon the field within a couple of moments, and al though the two Captains and Um pire Glendon desired to finish the game, it was getting dusk, and as the crowd would not be dispersed it was decided to call the contest. The Johilstown management and rooters are extremely anxious to have another game scheduled, but the Faculty Committce e c , wi 1 not permit of any additions to the pres ent schedule of Manager Himes. The showing made in this Johnstown game was very satisfactory as State fairly outbatted their opponents and also fielded well. Pierce's double and triple were features, also Mcll veen's two two baggers, and two hard singles each by Cree and Thompson. Saturday At ril 21, at Johnstown. The score.
