good sign of the life of our Association
is the disposition to make the most of
every. opportunity to perfect its meth
ods in work. We sincerely hope that
it will be felt more sensibly than ever
in its influence upon new students at
the opening of next year. Take new
students by the hand and make it pleas
ant instead of disagreeable for them.
Do not accord them any treatment in

ciety were made in a former number
of TILE FREE LANCE. The need of this is
so apparent that it does not require dis
cussion to decide thit the step ought to
be taken. Let each of the societies
now existing choose one representative
from each college and preparatory class
so that these persons may organize to
begin the active life of a third society
at the beginning of next year. There
is a demand for a third society. Its es

good, for they sometimes discourage

those who have made worthy efforts.
Yet the competition itself is beneficial.
The prizes in most cases do not repay
for the labor even in the case of the
successful student, but the benefit de
rived from the discipline and pre'paration
connected with contests is common to
all competitors, and is worth the effort.
We are glad to note that more students
intend to take part than usually partici
pate. Congratulations to all the suc.
cessful and much praise for the honest
efforts of all !

W , l' l .'" of sports answer the question :
What have you clone to organize your
department, and create enthusiasm in
it ? We see nothing to show for your
work if you have clone any. Much of
the equipage provided last year has not
even been seen this year. Whether it
be lost or stored away who knows?
Shame on a hollow pretense ! Last
year's Field Day ought to have been
greatly improved upon this year, but
most departments of our Athletic Asso
ciation have been heard in these tones :
"Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a
little folding of the hands to sleep." We
say these things at this late date with
the hope that this year's Field Day may
be impressed upon the memory of our
students, and may serve as an inspira
tion (?) next year.
