It has come to an end. The
1993 soccer season is officially
over. The team did not play
their last game of the season at
Slippery Rock University due
to inclement weather
conditions.
Did they reach .500? The
answer is no, but they ended
with a record of 7-8-1.
"It is very unfortunate that
we didn’t get to play,"
commented Coach Perritano,
"but when I evaluate the
season, a lot of learning took
place. This season has helped
me to understand what direction
we are headed in."
"The group is a very young
team. It takes a tot to adjust to
college and understanding each
other," said Coach Perritano.
"To accomplish this record and
more in the following years,
the guys need to continue
developing themselves as
players and students."
The team is losing one
player from this year's team,
Rusty Brown.
"I ended my career on a
positive note. As far as a team
and coaching staff, this group
has a bright future,"
commented Brown.
Looking down the road to
the future, many have
commented on their
expectations.
"Just looking at the future,
the people, and the program, it
looks very bright and
enthusiastic," said Coach
Perritano.
"We improved over the
season and pulled together at
the end. We had a tot of fun!,”
exclaimed Jason Freer.
"There's a tot of young talent
returning and Coach Perritano
is very excited about the next
few years to come,"
commented Rick Nese. "If
recruiting goes as well as it's
going right now and we get the
players, we will be competing
for the NCAA Division 111
title."

The night was filled with
slams, great shooting and
electricity in the air.
Tuesday night at Erie Hall the
Behrend Athletic Department
sponsored the third annual
Behrend Basketball Open House.
The Open House included
introductions of both players
and coaches, a 3-point shootout
and a slam dunk exhibition.
For the first time in its three
year history, the Behrend Lions
defeated the Lady Lions in the
three point shootout
Leading the way for the Lions
was freshman point guard Chad
Sutton who knocked down 12
out of 15 from the 3-point line.
Asked whether he felt pressure
about hitting his first seven
shots Sutton said, "I didn't want
to stop and think about it."
In the individual shooting
Byron Thorne and Wendy
Ebinger tied for second with
nine, Jose Fortuno hit seven,
Michelle Grover nailed six,
Becky Swartz had five, and Don
Plyler and Becky Reed each hit
four.
Disappointed by his
performance, Plyler said, "When
it counts for three, I'll hit it."
In the slam dunk exhibition,
freshman Todd Sturgin got the
crowd going with his dunking
exhibition. His aerial show
brought the crowd to its feet and

to come this year from the
Behrend Lions.
When asked if he gets excited
when the crowd cheers, Sturgin
said, "when you get the crowd
going, it really gets your blood
pumping."
The other players in the
dunking exhibition were Rob
Hunt, Byron Thome, Eddie
Edwards and Steve Spencer.
For the two first-year head
coaches, Joe Shapiro of the
Lions and Roz Fomari of the
Lady Lions, the Open House
was both to their liking.
"The support that we did get
from the crowd, administration
and faculty was great to see and
finished second in the voting
with four first place votes.
Win one for the Gipper:
Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz is
only interested in a win in
Saturday’s showdown between
the number one ranked Florida
State Seminoles and the number
two ranked Notre Dame Fighting
Irish. If the Irish are down by
one point to the Seminoles late
in the game, Holtz said that they
will go for the two point

I was very excited about that,"
said Shapiro.
Fomari said, "I loved the
crowd and I loved the
enthusiasm we generated."
Both coaches will be
preparing their teams for battle
next week for the opening of the
season.
As for what we can expect
from both teams this season,
Coach Shapiro said, "our style
will be a very fast, up tempo,
high pressured style of play."
As for Fomari, she feels good
about the upcoming season and
that we can expect a little more
offense with the same tough
defense.
"Man with the fan”: James
Miller, the paraglider who flew
into the ring during the
heavyweight tide bout between
Evander Holyfield and Riddick
Bowe, may face a stiffer penalty
than was first announced. Miller
could face a year in jail if Nevada
prosecutors upgrade the charge
against him to a gross
misdemeanor.
