Later Saturday evening, the reknowned comedienne Paula Poundstone performed in Erie Hall. feel free to :.,..,',,..-',-*:::.,', I:, ...„., led; 1 tO; , . from Poundstone Interview by Tom Keefe Assistant News Editor On October 2, Paula Poundstone performed at Erie Hall as part of Behrend's Homecoming festivities. Shortly before her performance, The Collegian had a chance to talk to her. Because of her restricted time schedule we were only able to talk to her fora few minutes. When asked how she started in comedy, Poundstone replied, "I was busing tables in Boston and I started doing open-mike nights at a place that started having open mike nights." Poundstone said that there were a lot of influences in her life although she didn't realize what they were doing. She added, "I don't think I knew much about standup comedy perse, but I always knew that I wanted to be a comic actress of some sort." Her major influences were Lily Tomlin, Gil& Radner, Lucielle Ball. and Carol Burnett. Poundstone said that she really enjoys performing, although her job isn't all fun. She commented, "I like the part of the performing... Almost all the rest of it can probably be dropped, but it's the same for any job." When asked if there are any drawbacks to being so famous, she had no major complaints. She replied, "...no one comes up and rags on me or anything...and I don't really have crowd control problems." Jeff Zimmerman/Contributing Photographor Most of Poundstone's material comes from personal experiences. She said "Almost everything I say is true...and the things that aren't true are glaringly untrue." Because she had arrived minutes before the interview, Poundstone did not really have any comments about Behrend. She jokingly said "...it had a lovely entry way." Asked if she thinks her friends treat her differently now that she is famous, she replied, "Probably. I imagine there's people that tolerate me that otherwise wouldn't have." She added that she sometimes does the same thing. "I've known people that are performers, and I knew them because they were performers...that's part of what makes somebody interesting. But, you could say the same thing for people in all sorts of roles that cause you to know them." The interview was conculded with a question which Pcondstone considered a "Miss America" question. What would she change about the world if she could change anything? She replied, "...I wouldn't really end disease, because we'll live too long, it'll get too crowded, there would be lines everywhere, it would be bad. But I think that I would eliminate guns. If I had my choice with being wracked with cancer and being shot...go with the cancer, *it's so much more innocent." Page 5
