Page 14 Jen Colvin/ Collegian Photographer Athlete of the Week: Sophomore Jennifer Puerto has improved immensely this year according to Coach Dan Gallegos "We had trouble getting into the game" --Coach Wilson by Michelle Bauer Collegian Staff This past Tuesday the Lady Lions volleyball team traveled to Grove City. While there, the team experienced a blackout that canceled the match against Grove City and Waynesburg. Coach Wilson would like to thank all the fans who traveled to Grove City. These games will not be rescheduled, but the Lady Lions will play these teams later in the season. On September 25, the Lady Lions played in the Alfred Tournament. In the first game the lions lost to Elmira, with scores of 11-15, 15-2, and 12- 15. Their second game was against Alfred, with the Lions winning 15-2 and 15-10. The Lady Lions then" moved on to the finals where they lost again to Elmira 7-15, 7-15. Coach Wilson commented, "Elmira had a fairly experienced team. They were able to find the holes in our team and play on them." She also commented that the Elmira team seemed to out psych the Lions. Coach Wilson Puerto. ,Matures Lady Lions continue slide also said that Molly Samuels, middle hitter for the team, played very well. Coach Wilson noted that in the Alfred game, "The team had the best attack percentage of the year. The team was really focused with only two serving errors." The coach also commented on Carrie Grzejka who had fifty percent of the kills. The Lions finished the tournament in second place. On September 23, the Lady Lions took on Wooster College here at home. The seams front this game were 1-15, 14-16, and 9-15. The key players in this game were Grzejld, :SaTnueli, and Jonelle Curtis. Coach Wilson's said, "We _played real tenativ,ely.,, We had trouble getting into the game." The Lady Lipns are on the road again today, visONI Thiel for a tri-match. Westminster is the other team they , will play. They are home on . October 5, when they play Washington and Jefferson and Fredonia. Jennifer Puerto, a third semester accounting major, has played near flawless tennis in the last week as she has improved her record to 9-5 in singles. Puerto won two matches in Behrend's Super Sport Tournament this weekend. The two victories landed the sophomore out of Miami, Florida on the All Tournament Team. "She's much improved since last season," said tennis coach, Dan Gallegos, "she's a more mature player." "Mentally more than anything," said Puerto on her improvement, "I enjoy it more." Puerto commented on the team, most of whom are here from last year's first winning season. "We've all grown mentally. We can all enjoy it more since we don't have freshman jitters." When Puerto isn't busy on the court, she spends a good deal of time in many activities. Puerto is a member of Lambda Sigma, Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity, OLAS (secretary), and the Accounting Club, in which she is Vice-President Coach Gallegos summed up Puerto's play by saying, "A day without Jennifer at practice is a day without sunshine. She brightens up the whole team."
