Thursday, September 30, 1993 Netters tie win record by Paul Young Collegian staff Led by the formidable forehand of sophomore Annmarie Faso, the Behrend women's tennis team reached the finals of this year's Super Sport Tournament, only to bow to their nemesis Allegheny College by a score of 3-1. The tournament was held this past Saturday here at Penn State- Behrend, and featured a strong field of teams: The lady netters began their quest for the title with a 5-0 whitewashing of Waynesburg. Singles winners for the team included Faso, sophomores Holly Olarczuk and Jennifer Puerto, as well as freshman Shelly Pearson. Sophomores Melissa Barger and Rhonda Dennison gained a doubles victory for Coach Dan Gallegos' squad. The Lady Lions were stingy against Waynesburg, giving up a meager 14 games in five matches. In the semifinals, the lady aces, who according to Olarczuk are "stronger as a tram this year," squared off against Washington and Jefferson. Faso, Olarczuk and Puerto all earned convincing singles victories for the team. Next came the final featuring Allegheny, who garnered their spot with identical 3-2 victories over St. John Fisher and Frostburg State. Despite receiving an 8-1 thrashing by Faso at the number one singles position, Allegheny proved to be too strong by winning the remaining three singles matches on their way to the third annual Super Sport title. Faso, Puerto, and Olarczuk were all selected to represent Behrend on the All-Tournament Team. • Even though they fell short in the championship match, Coach Gallegos believes that his "mentally tough" Lady Lions are "hotter than a batch of chili pePPels." Their defeat of Washington and Jefferson particularly stands out in the coach's mind. "They (W&J) were ambushed," said Gallegos. "We bush-wacked 'cm!" Behrend's lone singles win came on the racket of Faso, who teamed with Olarczuk to also prevail in doubles. That was not enough, however, as Frostburg emerged with a 7-2 victory. The Behrend women's tennis team's record now stands at 8-6, which ties the all-time win record. Olarczuk attributes this success to the team's ability to "pull out tough situations and win when needed." Faso has been particularly impressive over the past two seasons. She is 13-1 this season, and according to Gallegos, an "unreal" 31-4 over the past two years. Faso lost only one game throughout the entire Super Sport Tournament. With the rain out of Monday's rescheduled match with Grove City, the Lady Lions have two matches and two tournaments remaining. They face off with Buffalo State today here at Befuend. Baseball: Play the Winning Way' N . H . L. opens From page 15 Winnipeg will ride the back of Teeamu Selanne and see what they can do with their young offensive talent in the roughest division of the league. Finally, the Pacific division will consist of: the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, LA Kings, San Jose Sharks and Vancouver Canucks. For the LA Kings, it is another shot at getting to the finals. They should be the favorites after last year's beating of Vancouver. With thetzky and Company on offense they should have no problem scoring, but once again they need a good defense. Right now their defense will maybe win them the division. For Vancouver, it is time for their talented offensive players like Cliff Ronning and Trevor Linden to show up in the playoffs. If they do that, who knows? The other two teams, the unnoticeable ones, are the Flames and Oilers. These two teams have been resting in mediocrity lately and will try to pick up the pieces. Finally, the two expansion teams, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and the San Jose Sharks. For them, this year and the next will be rebuilding years so that in a couple of seasons they will be formidable opponents. One I.M. Report The deadline for I.M. cross country is Friday, October 8 at 4:00 p.m. The divisions for this year are men's and women's individual, and men's, women's, and coed teams. The event begins at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 9. Check in is at the starting line located at the north corner of the soccer fields. The course is approximately 3.1 miles long and circles parts of the campus and the fitness trail. For a map of the course and further details contact Rob in the I.M. office at extension 6280. Vote Keith McFall Homecoming King thing on their side was free agency because they picked up some older and experienced players to help them through the transition of losing. Who will be the winners in each division? Well, in the Atlantic, look for the N.Y. laslanders because after beating the Penguins in the playoffs, the drive to get to the Stanley Cup Finals will be the focus of this young team. In the Northeast, the Penguins look to be the team to beat. Once again they have the most potent offense and now with the acquisition of Marty McSorley from L.A., their defense looks that much stronger. Also, Mario Lemieux will now have someone to watch over him. In the Central it's a toss up, but the Detroit Red Wings seem to be the best one. Although they choke the playoffs away every year, they will win the division in a close race with Toronto. Finally, in the Pacific, look for the great one Wayne Gretzky to lead his team to the division title this year. Last year he knew he came so close to winning the Cup, and this year with his new contract he is determined to win one more time before he leaves the game. Page 13
