SPORTS Plans to improve soccer and baseball by Ilia Belkin Collegian Staff On August 18, 1993 Penn- State Behrend Athletic Director Herb Lauffer announced the hiring of new head soccer and baseball coach Dan Perritano. Coach Perritano came to Behrend after his successful stint at Monroe Community College in New York, where in three years he won two Region 111 Championships and led his team to the national finals in '92. Perritano's incredible 51-10 record over 3 years earned him the 1992 Region 111 Coach of the Year award. Prior to his coaching at MCC, Perritano also had experience coaching for a team in California and assisting at a school in Massachusetts. His only prior experience of coaching baseball was at the high school level. However, Perritano has an incredible plan to turn around the soccer and baseball programs as soon as possible. • Be stresses* great work ethic and believes that the teams must be balanced. "We can't rely on two or three players to do everything. If we put a whole team effort into a game, well that is all a coach can ask," said Perritano. Perritano wants to build both programs on young players and good recruiting. He will definitely have his work cut out for him, but with solid returning players and good young freshmen, things might turn around quicker than first thought. In his private life, Perritano enjoys running. He says it's a good way for him to stay in shape and have endurance. Perritano believes that it's always important for everyone to stay active. Coach Perritano is happy here at Behrend. "Behrend has a great environment and atmosphere. The school is very good in academics and the kids are great. The staff couldn't be anymore supportive than they have been," added Perritano. DON'T [FORGET Poonio-1; il]z:?, lailTiV a R 2 @Lamm REGER - v - Er GEFITe $17.50 6 1 TWENT GEFiriG $lO.OO W i et Cr. Last weekend Gannon hosted the Bud Elwell Invitational, ) where Behrend ended up in ninth place. Head Coach Herb Lauffer was impressed with their overall team score of 333, which boosted them significantly from last year's 14th place finish. Lauffer pointed out that, "shooting 333 was better than our best score last year". Jake Nasits and Kevin Orlosky posted low scores. Lauffer also stated that the team "has a good attitude, they always think golf, and all want to be better golfers." This attitude has produced a lot of "competition and ability to play" and a "good atmosphere." Due to inclement weather conditions, last week's match at Edinboro has been postponed until today. They are scheduled for Friday at Case Western Reserve and Monday at the Mercyhurst Invitational. The line-up for today's match includes sophomores Jake Nasits, Kevin Orlosky, Jamie Neumeier, Steve Seidler and senior Keith Camp. Rounding out this year's team is sophomore Jamie Baker, and freshmen Bill Grady and David Koster. TO GET
