Despite the apparent lack of experience, the squad is high in enthusiasm with good reason. Coach Perritano is a proven winner. While with Monroe Community College near Rochester, NY, he was part of two national championships. Along with this valuable experience he has also managed to mesh well with his new players, leading to a positive attitude throughout the team. The booters showed their zeal in the season opener against Laßoche College, blanking their opponents by a score of 2-0. Coupling a sterling defensive performance with goals by Andy Lafferty and Pat Millard, the Lions thoroughly dominated the game. The score did not reflect the explosiveness of the offense as they put 32 shots on goal, while Behrend goalie Dave Stohr Jeff Zimmerman/Collegian Photographer Rooters managed to keep the back of the net clean in the shutout. The Lions were not able to maintain their winning ways in their next three matches, however. Against Fredonia, they were turned away 4-1 with Lafferty posting the lone goal in the loss. The team traveled to SUNY Brockport next for tournament play. They were flat in a 4-1 loss to Nazareth College with Lafferty once again knocking in the only goal. They rounded out the tournament with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of St. John Fisher. Although they have suffered three straight setbacks, optimism remains high among the players. Junior sweeper Brian Hurley commented, "Even though we're young and relatively inexperienced, we have a lot of enthusiasm and talent. On top of that, we have a great coach who definitely knows how to win." The Lions hope to build on these traits and get back into the win column soon. He was working at a basketball camp in Pittsburgh this summer whcn he found out about the opening position here at Behrend. He applied for the position and 3 weeks later he received a phone call from Sports Athletic Director Herb Lauffer for an interview. Two days later he was offered a contract. Shapiro said the reason he chose Behrend was because, "I have always loved western Pennsylvania and the Pittsburgh area." He also thinks that there is a tradition being built here. Shapiro is a positive motivator and will instill professionalism in his team. He feels that his positive attitude will make it enjoyable for the players on the court and for the fans in the stands. He teaches four classes a semester in the exercise science program, and feels he can bring a great deal of experience and professionalism to his programs. In his spare time he enjoys working on his new home that he just bought and spending time with his fiance, Debbie.
