Smith Collegian Staff If somebody offered you a million dollars (guys or girls, it If somebody offered you a million dollars for one night with your significant other, would you do it? doesn't matter) for one night with your significant other, would you do it? A summertime adventure that leaves something to be desired by Sarah Mekbiorre Colftwicas Staff The Sandlot is a movie about kids for people with the same mentality as kids. There are a few scenes that made me snicker and I guess I was pleasantly surprised, but then again I saw it for free. A young boy moves to a new town with only two weeks left until the end of the school year. He has only that short period to make friends for the summer. The neighborhood boys are a tight group who play baseball everyday at the sandlot. They need one more person to round out the team. Perfect right? Wrong! Smalls can't play baseball. He can't catch and he throws like a girl. Finding your place in a new environment is always hard. Being the new kid is never fun. The Sandlot explores this dilemma and follows the summertime adventures of the boys. Most of the time I find child acting pretty dry and very staged. This movie didn't disappoint me in that aspect. It seemed like the actors were concentrating way too hard on hitting which made it seem somewhat fake. more than decent Would you let them do it?. . And how would you react afkrwanls? Think hard about that last question. And then go to see Indecent Proposal, directed by Adrian Dyne. This movie is about a young couple, David and Diane, played by Woody Harrelson and Demi Moore, whose dreams of building a dream house are shattered by a recession in the house-building and selling industries. Desperate, they go to Vegas, where they lose their last nest egg gambling. Of course, this isn't the whole story. Diane Catches the eye of arrogant billionaire John Gage. (Robert Redford) Gage makes a proposal to the young couple, after an argument between Gaae THE SANDLOT hits the big screen Entertainment and the couple over whether money can buy people. He offers David a million dollars to have sex with Diane. The two at first refuse, but Diane talks David into it. After all, he needs the money. Yes, I will tell you that the consummation does occur. But again, that's not the whole story. The story then turns to the aftermath of the incident- the distrust and pain that tests severely the love of the young couple. Will they forget the incident? Or can there be forgiveness? That I won't tell you. You'll have to see the movie for the answers. The movie does have merit. The acting is exceptional especially by Moore and, amazingly, Harrelson (Good to know he can dump his "Woody " persona). Redford is good as always. The way he plays arrogance and yet underneath it is really a nice guy is commendable. About the only problem this movie has is it's a bit lengthy. I won't give too much away, but there's a section in the middle where David and Diane aren't together yet we hope they will soon be. Obviously the tension here is important. But we don't need it stretched out quite as long as it turns out to be. The twist in the plot that eventually ends the film is confusing because of it. Still in all, Indecent Proposal is a very good movie. If the commercials (which I realize have been playing endlessly) Page 11 have left you feeling the film might be cheesy, don't be fooled "...don't be fooled by the commercials. Indecent Proposal is a more than decent movie." by the commercials. Indecent Proposal is a more than decent movie. I propose you see it. And then ask yourself, so, if I was in his or her shoes, would I do it? Definitely Something to think about.... Smalls (Tom Guig) received his name from Bennie (Mike Vitar), who was the best player ever at the sandlot. He is the guy on the street that everyone looks up to. And when smalls gets the group in in the biggest "pickle" of their lives, it's up to Bennie to get them out of it. A great portion of the movie deals with the beast behind the outfield fence. The plot is very simple and seems like it was done before. So many lines are cliches. For example, when Smalls takes forever to throw a ball back, one of the boys yells "It's about time! My clothes are going out of style!" Surprise appearances by Dennis Leary and James Earl Jones add a little spice to the movie. Jones, as always, plays his part well. He is a very strong and powerful actor-his presences are amazing consider ing the short time he is on screen. I feel like I've been a little unjust and tough. It is a very good effort by the kids. I think people should wait until the movie comes out on tape or cable. Ok, you could take a kid to see the film and pass it off as his idea.
