Today, transfusion patients rarely
receive whole blood. Instead they
receive the blood component that
will best treat their condition.
This is called Component
Therapy. It allows for better
management of the blood supply
and provides the most effective
treatment for the patient. Burn
patients receive plasma, while
cancer patients receive platelets,
and trauma patients receive red
blood cells. A fourth product
called cryoprecipitate helps
hemophiliacs.
All donors must be between
the ages of 17 and 65, weigh at

with a membership of 12

and Elise Mongil remain.
Membership now is 12 students.
"The purpose of OLAS is to
educate not only the non-Latin

the Latin Americans on campus.
We have students from
Colombia, Venezuela, Puerto

that go into Latin America," said
Manguel.
