Thursday, February 25, 1993 At A Glance. . . Patricia Roberts, an active member of the Erie County Republican Party, was elected the first female member of the Erie Maennerchor Club. The Maennerchor Club, which has been all-male for 120 years, had fallen under criticism for rejecting the applications of six women including Erie County Judge Stephanie Domitrovich, although the club had changed its charter to allow female members six years ago. "I think this will give other women encouragement that they can be members," Roberts said. Men losing their hair should look to their hearts. A study found that men aged 21 to 55 who are severely bald are three times as likely to suffer heart attacks than men with a full head of hair. Men with mild to moderate balding have a 1 1/2 times greater risk. The reason for the apparent link between balding and heart attacks remains unknown, although researchers speculate that a male hormone necessary for baldness may have a role in suppressing "good" HDL cholesterol, which protects the heart. The study consisted of 665 male heart attack victims and 772 similar men who had not suffered heart attacks. The study was published in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association. "The bold growth package proposed by President Clinton on February 17 delivers on the commitments he had made repeatedly to small businesses and.its adoption is essential to economic growth and job creation at home and America's competitive position in the global economy," acting United States Small Business Administrator Dayton J. Watkins said. Watkins specifically praised the President's tax proposals and his proposals for a permanent seven percent investment tax. The United States, in cooperation with the United Nations will make an effort to parachute supplies into the former Yugoslavia, officials said Tuesday. The Clinton administration has downplayed the risk of such an operation, saying it would not embroil the United States in the savage ethnic battles in Bosnia. The White House is currently considering extending aid to Serbian towns, as well as Croatian and Muslim areas, in the hopes that such actions will lessen chances of Serb retaliation. The Rodney King civil rights trial, scheduled to begin Wednesday, was delayed by two legal obstacles. Alleged prejudicial comments made by the only black female juror have lead to a request for a mistrial by lawyers defending four white police officers. Officer Timothy Wind claims that his defense lawyer, Paul Depasquale, has a conflict of interest because he used to be a law partner with Michael Stone, who is defending suspended police officer Laurence Powell. The case will be postponed until Federal Judge John Davies rules on the requests. ... pring. B v ' k s a l e rea . ..•.. ..,%... Her lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in Room 101 of the Otto Behrend Science Building. Hunter is head of Sally Hunter Productions/Video Base International, a New York-based video production company that specializes in producing long form political documentaries for candidates in the United States and abroad. Video Base International pioneered the use of the "documercial," an advertising style that mimics the look, feel, and credibility of television news. Among Hunter's typical assignments: producing a video biography for a Nobel Peace Prize candidate, a documentary on famine in The Sudan used to request $lOO million in aid from the United States, a video explaining food service and nutrition programs to patients at a major medical center, and a presentation for a medical research group designed to forestall government regulation. The multi-lingual Hunter has produced- films in Spanish, French, Creole, Italian, Japanese, Arabic, and Portuguese for political candidates--including presidential candidates--in Costa Rica, Italy, Great Britain, Venezuela, The Sudan, the Dominican Republic, Mauritius, Puerto Rico, and Bolivia. Prior to founding Video Base International in 1983, Hunter worked as a reporter at Newsweek magazine and Copenhagen Times magazine, and a general manager of Newsweek magazine's now defunct video division. "Sex and the Single Voter" is free and open to the public. For more information about Hunter's lecture, please call the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences, 898-6108. Sixty Corry and St. Andrews school students will be visiting today and tomorrow. "We are doing it at the request of the public to show children what a college campus is like," said Mari Trenkle, Academic Support Programs Coordinator, who put together the itinerary for the visits. There will be 35 first grade students from Corry coming today, arriving at the Reed Building around 12:00 p.m. They will then begin a walking tour of the campus guided by Lion Ambassadors and Campus Tours Admissions Tour Guides. During the tour, one group will stop by Science 110 to attend a demonstration by Dr. Tucker, while the other group will go to Nick 5 to visit with Dr. Cunningham for a small mammals exhibit. After that they will reunite in the Wintergarden for milk and cookies. They will leave around 1:30 p.m. "We are just letting the children catch a glimpse of college," said Trenkle. A second batch will arrive by 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. Twenty-five sixth, seventh, and eighth graders from St. Andrews will begin with a walking tour of the campus, and the highlight will be the Computer Center. At 11:30 the students will join in the Wintergarden for milk and cookies and will then break into small groups to talk with individual students, including volunteers from the Association of Black Collegians about college life. "For the St. Andrews students, this is a career day. They'll have a one-on-one experience with Behrend students. This is very important to some of the students for the process of choosing a major and a college." from POOR on page 2 They also received a situation card, which had a positive or negative impact on each group's advancement. Ron Gray, a RA and seventh semester human resource management major, played the Options Game. Gray learned how the rich manipulate the poor to better their status, and how the middle class also manipulates the poor. He realized the limited options of the poor and why they often resort to illegal activities. Tesha Nesbit, an eighth semester communication major, who was a member of the rural poor admitted, "It's frustrating being poor. I now understand what people (living in poverty) are going through." Jacquie Wade, founder of HRPC, concluded "The Options Game gave students insight into the limited options of the poor in real life and what they have to work with." from WHITE on page Awareness Week during the fall, Gallagher said the program needed "more publicity and more involvement with other organizations." The White-Out was concluded with a field sobriety test conducted by the Department of Police and Safety. Mocktails were served by members of KDR in Perry Hall.
