He also noted that the building is equipped with full fire and security systems including a sprinkler system, fireproof walls around heating and electrical equipment, and barriers to prevent smoke from traveling from one area to another. The interior of the building features various balconies and overhangs like the ones in the Wintergreen Lobby in the Reed Building. The main entrance to the new building is mostly glass with a four-story ceiling. The center of the library is open from the first floor up to the skylights on the roof of the third floor. The second floor balcony is enclosed in glass to prevent noise from carrying from one level to the next. Also, most of the interior of the library will be carpeted to help with noise reduction. Meyer admits that "It's going to be a beautiful building. I'm very proud of it." There will be no new parking added around the library. The only vehicles with access are those used for deliveries. A driveway from the Reed lot to a loading dock on the north face is the only road to the building. Students will reach the library by sidewalks and enter at the end of the academic hall closest to the Reed Building or through the main entrance in front of Niagara. Once students enter either the ground floor of the academic wing or the first floor of the library, they will use stairs or the elevator to reach the study rooms and computer centers located on the ground floor of the library. Meyer continued that the heating system "is very unique and efficient." A portion of the ceiling is made up of a one foot wide aluminum strip. Hot water passes through copper pipes above the aluminum, warming the strips and radiating heat into the rooms. Heating and cooling systems use hot and cold water to condition the air. The money for the project was first allocated back in 1984. Nine years later, the project is a few months from completion. from GRANTS on page 1 "It's highly unusual for undergraduates to have these kinds of research opportunities. At most universities, research is dominated by graduate students." Junior biology majors, Shankar Santhanam of Erie and Jennifer Mook of Meadville, each received $5OO for their research projects. Barry Westcott, a junior chemistry major from New Castle and Susan Zackiewicz, a senior chemistry major from Cony, also received $5OO each.
