Page 4 Editorial Build our future University President Joab Thomas, in an article published in the November 23 issue of The Daily Collegian, predicted some very painful University wide budget cuts. Thomas made it clear that downsizing, not expansion is the University's new goal. At the same time, the University Board of Trustees approved three separate plans to build new buildings and additions. Meanwhile, back at the ranch (University Park), several majors are in jeopardy of being totally eliminated or severely cut back. It's just a matter of time before the University's Future Committee releases recommendations for further cuts in the system and those "recommendations" could affect each and every student at Behrend. Our question is a simple one. What is the University's priority? Are we in fact dedicated to undergraduate education or have we traded up to building construction and renovation? • An audited financial report submitted to the board last week states the University is worth 2.8 billion dollars (before depreciation). Let's use these assets to fulfill our mission: to educate. Sure we need buildings, but we can make do with what we have in order to prepare our minds for the future we will inevitably face. Here's our recommendation: less building, less research, more teaching and more learning. The:'''' . My favorite time of the year, well, after my birthday, because then I'm the only one getting presents and everyone pays attention to ME! Christmas is definitely the best season of the year. When else can you use your credit card impulsively and defend yourself cause you're buying for someone else? So what if you end up keeping whatever it is for yourself, your intention WAS to give it away. For me, the Christmas season officially begins this weekend. The second weekend after Thanksgiving is the best time to begin Christmas shopping. For one, all those nuts who go out the day after Thanksgiving have spent all their money and don't get paid for another week. They're out of commission for at least a week (unless of course they have a high credit limit). This is also the time senior citizens feel it's safe to . come out of hiding. This gives me the chance to see what all the other grandparents are buying this year so I can prepare myself to react excited when I open my gift. I Interested in taking over The Collegian? Who can resist cracking a smile while watching the little tykes crawling•onto Santa's lap to recite their book of wants. That was one of the best parts of going shopping when I was little, cause Mom never bought me anything I wanted back then (they didn't give credit cards to 5 Thursday, December 3, 1992 year olds either). Nov, the only time I want to crawl onto Santa's lap is if he resembles Mel Gibson when he takes his suit Off. So, do what I'm gonna.do. I've got three papers due next week, but this is the best shopping weekend of the year. I'll sec you at the mall this weekend. (P.S. If you see me next week it's the No Doz talking.)
